Hello one and all :hello:

I am making a Christmas Cake for my daughter's school Christmas Fayre - Guess the Weight of the Cake!!! - Normally when I make my cake it costs around £20  - does anyone have any ideas how to make this cheaper? Can you post the recipe if you do - here's hoping!!!
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

Can't you buy a cheap fruit cake from a supermarket, then ice it? Morrisons have BOGOF on their royal icing and fondant icing mixes
    I haven't got one!

I think that most Christmas cake recipes have similar ingredients so it's probably no cheaper if you use a different recipe. Why don't you post your list of ingredients so that we can have a think about the cheapest sources? For example, someone here may well know of a cash-and-carry where you can pick up cheap dried fruit, flour etc and someone else might be able to tell you where you can get a good deal on butter and eggs.

    Good luck!

I always used to make my own Christmas cake when the kids were young, but I have not made a cake for years. For years I have not had a Christmas cake as we always had enough to eat and no-one wanted it. This year my daughter's coming home from Mexico with the 2 grandchildren (their 1st Christmas in England) so I've bought an iced one from Morrisons, only cost £2.99 (1 kilo) cheaper and easier than making one.

If you use a bought one, people will guess the weight easily if they've been to the supermarket and seen the size of them.
Does it have to be a Christmas cake? How about a yummy chocolate log? Still nice and festive. :)

I make a cake every year without all the usual alcohol and rich fruits in it as I'm not keen on them then I brush it with apricot jam and decorate it with nuts.

I have replaced the booze with cranberry juice, which for us cuts the cost rather dramatically.
