mazda5
I need to replace my car and after looking round garages I really like the mazda5, especialy the sliding doors. The only thing putting me off is that I have read on various sights that the mazda5 eats tyres, ie. new tyres needed at 10 - 12000 miles, and that mazda refuse to acknowledge the problem. In the showroom the…

MOT partial retest Catch 22
Just found to my cost that there are some loopholes in the partial retest rules, which garages can exploit to rip you off. First, if you fail for simple things, such as lights, you are meant to get a free retest if you return the car and get it retested the next day. Trouble is, if the test centre can't fit you in the next…

Best place to advertise used car?
I know this might be counter-intuitive but where do you think I should advertise my brother's 4-year old Volvo V40 to get a reasonable deal? He bought a new car and the dealer was offering peanuts part-exchange so I thought I'd sell it for him but wanted to get the best deal for him. He lives near Woking/Guildford, Surrey.…

Engine Oil- should it be black when fresh?
Hi, Just got my car back after a service, it's a lubrication service which includes changing the oil. I checked the dipstick today and found the oil to be black and quite thin. Before I go and rant at the garage about the oil not being changed. does fresh oil come in black? I always thought it to be clear. I got a little…

Attempted Theft / Broken Heart
I am at my wits end! Sunday night someone tried to steal my car. I got up to go to work and discovered the passenger door all bent back so that they could get in and the steering column plastic covering smashed and the steering wheel moves alot when you wiggle it. Called the police, they sent someone round to check for…

Third party on other vehicles, without owning one?
Having just waved goodbye to what's left of my car, I'm not going to be getting a new one for a while. One of the more useful aspects of my car insurance (Esure) was being covered to drive any vehicle on a third-party basis. I'd like to carry on with this arrangement, as it's useful for weekends away with friends and the…

Parking ticket valid?
Hello guys I hope this is the right place for posting. I received a parking ticket on a sunday on a yellow line. I thought it was free on sunday but apparently not. I'm fuming because I was away from the car for about 5 mins. I've just noticed that my vehicle registration is incorrect on the penalty charge notice. Do I…

Trust my garage review site.
Found this site. http://www.trustmygarage.co.uk/index.shtml I think it is a fantastic idea, although if you look some of the reviewers are anonymous and give little detail and give straight 5/5's (my cynical mind believes these anonymous people own the garages and want you to believe they are trustworthy while they're…

Insurance or pay?
Was a total muppet this morning. Reversed straight into my mother in law's car. Damage estimate is £530. My insurance excess is £200 and I've full no claims but not protected. My usual annual premium's are around £270ish. What do you all think I should do? Pay the £530 and not go through insurance or do via insurance?

Driving Licence query
Not sure if this is the place to put this. My cousin passed his driving test in 1998, and sent off all the documents straightaway for his real licence and forgot all about it. However his real licence never came..... Eventually, he did ring the DVLA who informed him that that had on record the date he passed his test but…

DVLA SORN - Reclaiming unfair charges ?
Hello everyone, I've just had to (reluctantly) pay a £40 fine for non-declaration of SORN (even though my vehicle has been sat in a garage for the last 5 years). After reading Martin's article on reclaiming unfair bank charges I was wondering whether we can reclaim these charges as they seem pretty unfair as well!!! Any…
