surely if they can afford a brasnd new car for their 17 year old kid they can afford insurance0

Not necessarily. You could buy a car for £6k and have a £3k insurance premium on it.
Best thing to do is check all the insurance groups and buy something that's in 1 or 2.Can I help?0 -

Hi - try youngmarmalade which is a personal lease deal for new or nearly new car coupled with comp insurance from £300.00 girls or £700.00 guys at age 17/lease depends on car chosen from panda corsa punto etc.0

I found https://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk to be cheapest for new drivers. Better to find cheap insurance I think than look for a free tied in deal.
Also there's nothing wrong with old cars so long as they are well maintained. And if whoever it is can afford a new car to give to a 17 year old, how come they're too stingy to fork out for insurance? I would get them an old banger myself, so long as I had taken it to a good garage and had it thoroughly checked over (brakes, steering etc).
I have heard about a 17 year old getting a Subaru Imprezza and the insurance cost for them. Wait for it... £12k. Yes, £12,000 per year. Apparently this was in a respectable magazine so I have no reason to doubt it and you certainly couldn't make a story like that up.0
