If I get a O2 PAYG sim, specifically to receive calls, will I have to top up & if so, how much & how often?

I have an iPhone 4 and my 24 month contract has expired. I would like to move to simplicity sim only contract but how do I do this easily? Do I just call O2 and ask them to switch me over? Do I get the sim online and cancel existing? Dont want to screw it up and lose my number! Thanks :D
