Will carpet + brushed steel handrail mean static
Just had a new carpet fitted to the stairs and need to fit a handrail, will a brushed stainless steel one give us a static shock every time we go upstairs? Random question I know… if no, what if we are in trainers, or socks? Just don’t want to order one and fit it only to be scared to touch the damn thing!

Hip to gable or side dormer?
We've just bought a 1930s semi with a hipped roof and want to convert the loft to a 4th bedroom, with a staircase to loft above the main staircase. To do this, we would need additional headroom as the stairs are on the hipped side of the house. Does anyone know if there's much of a cost difference between a full hip to…

Noisy neighbours
I bought my house in the middle of the lockdowns. My neighbours on one side are barbers so were closed initially. I didn't realise how much of a social hub barbers are. They play music from around midday to 9-10pm every day. Do I have any rights to get them to be quieter? Their music isn't deafening but there's a constant…

Which adhesive please?
I would like to stick some soft wood battons together for outdoor use.It will, once stuck, be cut to form a pointed, old fashioned door/gate half open with a scene behind. The ultimate aim would be to form a decorative (not functional) garden gate against the fence with a trump loile behind so I need it to last some time.…

Damp and water in walls in loft
We purchased a Persimmon home in September 2018. In September 2021 we were getting mould in my sons room and then water started to come into the corner of the wall. I contacted Persimmon who tried to extracate themselves on the grounds that it was over 3 years old but we stood firm and explained this was a problem with the…

Neighbors loft conversion, party wall.
Evening all, The attached house next door (semi) is about to have a loft conversion built. The owners are abroad, and are having work done to the house before they arrive. No party wall notice has been served, so hopefully that's because the party wall wont be altered. Not really concerned with the building work, we all…

Seal shut and stop water coming in the bottom of unused garage door
Hi, I use my garage as a gym so have no use for the main door. A builder was meant to seal the bottom. There is a fake wall inside, however I pull up my mats and there is water. His not sealed correctly and has placed the gutter drain onto the back of the garage door. I know this must be moved. How can I seal this gap from…

Neighbour's Summerhouse
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any more knowledge than I do on this. My neighbour started building a summerhouse/shed basically right into our shared fence line about six months ago. He's a landscaper by trade and before he started any work in his garden I explained to him that our fence needed repairing as it was not…

Deconstructing an internal porch
Hello all I'm after some tips on how to deconstruct this internal porch. My plan was to take the wooden door out, tape up the glass panes just in case, and use a chisel along the joins (ceiling, wall and floor) and crowbar to pry the wood panels away and hopefully gently lower to the ground one side at a time (will need to…

Is this a water stain?
The house tends to average around 60 % humidity these days which seems correct given outside temperatures of 13, outside humidity of 85% and indoor temperatures of 18 - 19. This one room at the end however is always higher than other rooms, often going to 80 if we sit in it to eat dinner and generally resting at 70% - 75%.…

What to do with peeling bedroom furniture
About 9 years ago I had fitted furniture installed in my bedroom - bedside cabinets, wall of wardrobes and a unit in the bay window. Now the laminate(?) coating is coming away on a lot of it and I am wondering what to do. I like the furniture as it is solid and saves space compared to free standing units. I did consider…
