Hip to gable or side dormer?

We've just bought a 1930s semi with a hipped roof and want to convert the loft to a 4th bedroom, with a staircase to loft above the main staircase. To do this, we would need additional headroom as the stairs are on the hipped side of the house.
Does anyone know if there's much of a cost difference between a full hip to gamble conversion and a side dormer? I'd expect the latter would be cheaper, but I've no idea and Google wasn't helpful.
Thanks

We discussed this with our builder and he suggested a gable is simpler, albeit not much price difference in the scheme of things. Our recent conversion with (nearly) full width rear dormer and hip to gable, which included bathroom and 2 bedrooms was £58k.0

Yes it is a very standard 1930s semi, the steep pitch allows decent headroom. With the large rear dormer we have 2 good sized double bedrooms front and back and 1.8 x 2.3 shower room.0
