Access rights and neighbours responsibilities
I am hoping someone can help me with two issues I'm having with my neighbour: 1) The lady next door to me doesn't maintain her garden and it has overgrown so much, it has pushed my fence down. I have approached her about this and she said that we could go back and cut away the shrubbery and try and fix it ourselves. After…

How many layers on bonding/filler for hole in the wall
To cut a long story short, my wall had to be cut out as a hole was drilled into a pipe behind it. After cutting out the plasterboard wall we realised there was a plank of wood behind covering most of the area. Most likely for support. The hole is about the size and shape of a car driver, or passenger side window. The…

Is an extension worth it financially?
I live in a 2 bed rural cottage with large garden. My neighbours moved recently and their extended (4 bed) home sold for twice what zoopla says our house is worth. We have been considering a 2 storey extension (we are the only house locally not extended, for now we have a static caravan at the end of the garden for extra…

Natuzzi sofas - haggling advice?
Hi Seen some new sofas we like in Nartuzzi but they are quite pricey. Currently advertised with “double discount” although I have no idea what this means but I suspect likely marketing spiel! I have been quoted 10% off list price but am I likely to get success with getting more of this price? Would love to hear others…

Dehumidifier vs Tumble Dryer
Hello, Hope everyone has had a fantastic Christmas! So, of course it is that time of the year again. Winter, window condensation and a hard time drying clothes. We own an old washing machine, with a max spin of 1000 rpm. We also have a smidge of condensation on our windows on the coldest of days (once it gets to around 8…

Fluorescent tube lights replacement/alternative
I have a number of
fluorescent tube lights throughout the house. The fittings have been
there probably since the 1970's. It's getting more difficult to buy
new tubes and starters. Currently I have T8 5 foot warm white
fluorescent tubes. I like the good light from these lights and
appearances don't bother me. Good light is…

Fire door advice please
We have planning permission for an extension and alterations to our house. We plan on putting in a door between the garage (not used for parking a car in) and the house. Building regs specify this should be E30S rated. This confuses me as I'm finding info suggesting that E is a European regulation whereas UK regs are FD.…

first time renovation
struggling big time with the stress. On my mind 24-7, sleepless nights etc. Sometimes its over really stupid things such as where will the broadband connectivity go/will it work etc. I know once its done it'll be amazing but just seems to be so much to do and nothing seems to go right. Some nice words appreciated!!

Clothes drying tent?
I have a dehumidifier which I use to dry washing but the smallest practical room that I use it in is quite large, is there a tent which I can put over both the drying rack and dehumidifier to lesson drying times?

Shared fence damaged - payment from neighbours
During the storms (early December) our fence came down between ourselves and the property at the back of our house The property at the back is a rental and the owners have been away for some time. We contacted the Estate agent who manages the property for the owners to tell them we were getting the fence repaired as our…

Candy GCC590NB 9KG Condenser Tumble dryer takes a really long time to dry clothes (SOLVED)
Hi all Our tumble dry has been acting up recently, it works, but it takes so long to dry clothes, it takes 2-3 cycles to properly dry clothes, whereas it use to do that before the end of the 1st cycle, has anyone here got experience with Candy tumble dryers? Is this to be expected because of the age of the unit (roughly 5…

Electricity in porch
I am in the process of (among other things) wiring a small room we've got downstairs (we are on the first floor). The easiest path the builder has found to the existing mains wiring is from a socket near the stairs. We will have around 8 sockets in the room downstairs (4 doubles), mainly used for low-powered devices plus a…

is beading for floors considered tacky?
Hello We are in the process of redoing the floors in our new house. All the rooms have quite complex skirting that is in 3 layers of MDF. The builder has suggested using beading in the rooms that currently have a carpet, and potentially redoing the skirting again (unless they can remove the skirting intact) in rooms where…

Spray paint kitchen cabinets
SWMBO saw an article (well an advert) for spraying all sorts of kitchen cabinets, including those which are vinyl wrapped, as ours are. Does anybody have any experience of this type of service. The one local (ish) to us is KCSUK.

Attaching shower hose to mixer tap - adapter?
Hi All, Happy New Year! I wanted to replace the shower hose and I think I unscrewed too much? The bath tub mixer tap (hansgrohe Ecostat 1001 CL) now has a 'hole' (= female thread), and the old shower hose has a male thread (diameter 15mm). It looks like there is like a little adapter or alike still attached to the hose,…

Old house - White mildew, mold
Well, after installing a log burning stove downstairs (which has saved massively on gas central heating) I have found that the white mildew on the outside facing walls and window mold on the glass and silicone sealant has got worse. I was told that having the log burner would keep the wall warmer, enough to stop damp from…

Replacing a bathroom extractor fan under warranty
My bathroom extractor fan has stopped working. I'm assuming the motor's failed. It's around 3 years old and under a manufacturer's 5 year warranty. The fan came with my new house and my understanding is I should go to the home builder to get it replaced. They're quoting around £130 for the work. It would be cheaper for me…

bathroom flooring
I had a wetroom installed for my late Husband who was diagnosed with MND. Sadly, he passed away. The closomat toilet was removed, and the doors around the shower area. We paid extra to have heated towel rail, new ceiling with spot lights etc, I got a nice little unit and it looks nice. However, the flooring had to be the…

Odour from new shower
Sigh Bathroom tiled 11 days ago. Shower cubicle fitted 9 days ago. Everything was fantastic. Last night SWMBO complained of an odour from the shower cubicle. I couldn’t smell anything so thought she was just overly sensitive. Today I could smell it. Happens after shower is used. SWMBO thinks it’s smells like body odour. To…
