What sort of lock is this?
Guys, What I thought was our mortice deadlock should be changed, firstly as we've just taken the property on and secondly as only one of the two keys we have works in the door. I did some research thinking it'd be straightforward, but then got confused between mortice deadlock and motice sashlock. I was convinced it was a…

Removing internal wall
First, disclaimer: Absolute DIY novice and mostly looking for opinions before I raise this as an idea to my exasperated other half, who is much more capable at DIY :-) TLDR: is removing an internal wall costly and painful, and can a supporting wall only be identified by an expert? We live in a teeny london terrace, moved…

Plumbing general question
Hello. This is more me just seeking knowledge rather than a specific issue im having. Do new builds normally link plastic central heating pipes through manifolds and if so where is this normally located? Is there another way they link plastic pipes? I'm intrigued after having a few plumbing issues that are now fixed.

Kitchen extension - unable to do drainage survey
Hi We are looking to an extension to our kitchen out the back (it was previously an extension out the side before we bought the house). We understand that we need to do a drainage survey but that we don't have access to the manhole cover. It looks like the previous owner built over it when doing a side extension. Is it…

Boiler Grant - applied November 2021
My boiler broke down at the beginning of November, i called my insurance people out but the plumbers they sent condemned it, said it was too much to repair and id have to buy a new one. It could have blown up at any minute, it had overheated and corroded and the newish pump wasn't working either. The insurance didn't cover…

Engineer trying to charge me again after he didn't mark drainage and manhole covers on?
I know there are a fair few trades people here so would like some opinions before I tackle the issue. We have been trying to get an extension for the last 13 months. (We currently do not have a fully functioning kitchen after most of it fell apart- naively thought we would be looking at a few months before we started). We…

Washing machine seal gone black
At the bottom of the seal, it's gone black as water seems to get trapped after a cycle has been done. My question is, can I simply pad the seal out with kitchen towel then pour thin bleach on it and let it sit a while? Will bleach attack the rubber?

True no minimum order kitchen suppliers?
Our dream kitchen is still some way off and have taken some interim measures to make the existing kitchen more serviceable which has also meant creating some of the ideas for the future kitchen in cheap units and will probably help the final design. Currently have a 900mm slot in cooker and in short want to replace it with…

Leaseholder breaks leas rules
One of the leaseholders in our block of 15 flats, who also happens to be a director of the freehold company, is breaking a rule of common areas by parking his motorcycle in the shared back garden. We have asked him numerous times to stop placing it there as the garden is not a parking place, initially he said he would, but…

Ceiling stains - condensation or leaky roof?
Hello all, Got these stains on the corner of our bedroom. Its the top floor so it has the insulated attic above. 1930s end terrace with a new roof installed in January 2020. My initial assumption was that the roof was leaking but before I contact the company that replaced my roof I'd like to rule out condensation. It wipes…

Keep storage heaters or replace with electric radiators?
Hi all, I think this is the right place to post as not directly related to energy. Would be interested in your thoughts. I live in a one bedroom coach house that only has electric supply - no gas. I currently have three storage heaters (a large one in the living room, smaller ones on the bedroom and landing). I also have…

advice on disconnecting a bathroom extractor fan
I have a bathroom extractor fan that comes on with the light and I want it to stop  I'm not planning on removing it - just leaving it in-situ and disconnected until I decide if I need to replace it or not. I can see how to disconnect it (the three cables from the mains are connected to the fan - it's like this one…
