Removing toilet seat

Options
 Hi all,

Can anyone help me here, I have no idea how I am supposed to get this toilet seat off for replacement.  I have just recently moved in to my first house and I've tried everything but these white nuts won't budge (see pic)

Any ideas please?

Thanks in advance

Twist them harder.  Make sure you are trying to do it the correct way, remembering they are upside down.

So are you saying in this case lefty loosy is the opposite and I should be twisting to the right?

Might help to use a cloth to get a decent grip and stop any damp causing your fingers to slip. They will be tight initially, especially as they bolt threads tend to rust. The 'lefty loosey' still applies, but remember if you're looking from above, everything is reversed

A long reach socket or box spanner would probably do the job if you knew what size to use.

  • ...or a pair of mole grips on the nut....

If shifting the nut doesn't work, mole grips on the actual threaded bar and turning anti-clockwise, as the thread will simply be screwed into the hinge.

Also, give the threads a good spray of WD40 or get some penetrating oil on them (as close in to the nut as possible), leave it for half an hour, then try again.  This can sometimes help a bit.

And when fixing the new seat always grease the thread generously.

I had this problem and ended up sawing through the bolts with a small hacksaw.

With a plastic nut it's easier to brake the nut
