Boiler Grant - applied November 2021

Options
My boiler broke down at the beginning of November, i called my insurance people out but the plumbers they sent condemned it, said it was too much to repair and id have to buy a new one. It could have blown up at any minute, it had overheated and corroded and the newish pump wasn't working either. The insurance didn't cover the cost of a replacement, so basically i was on my own.
Well i've just got over cancer, and i have a very low income currently. The plumber suggested i get a boiler grant, which I'd seen was a new scheme on this website.
So I applied for a boiler grant under EON around 8 November.
Approx 10 days later after it had broken down, a boiler assessor came to check what was needed and said i was eligible, checked my radiators were suitable and what was needed outside (the old boiler didn't have the right pipework outside apparently)
So I had heard nothing back since then till last week, when a lady rang up to arrange a further appointment to check what other energy efficiency i was eligible for. They're coming next Tuesday to check all the rooms and house for this.
Well currently, I'm without heating and hot water, my shower is out of action too as it was connected to the boiler. I asked the lady on the phone how long it would be before i'd get the boiler installed as i'd by then been 7 weeks without hot water and had had to borrow 6 electric heaters and was having to shower at family and friends houses, which is not ideal. She just said it 'probably wouldn't be long' and 'oh dear'. Not very helpful. But probably not her department.
I have a grown up daughter living at home, I'm not a vulnerable customer as I am not elderly (i'm 54) nor do I have young children.so i guess i'm not a priority.
My electric bills are soaring, my gas bill is very very small on the other hand!

Anyway, just after a little advice. Or if anyone else is in the same position and potentially, how often do these things take to get sorted all in all?
Ive waited 8 weeks now. I'm not complaining, after all the boiler grant will cover a hell a lot of the cost.
Just I'm very frustrated and longing to get all my rooms back to normal. My boiler cupboard, several cupboards and front porch had to be cleared out of all the stuff in them and I couldn't have my elderly mum over for Christmas as the house is too cold.
Moreover I'm longing for a lovely bath in my own bathroom!

  • Sorry to hear about your situation .
I can only go by my experience  in 2020 . I spent a lot on a boiler that I inherited  when I moved into my flat a few yesrs ago and  it was borderline condemned. Long story.

I too found eon , and if I remember correctly waited around 6 weeks after the  assessor told me I was accepted due to being on universal credit and homeowner.
He told me on the day , it was going to probably less than £500. I paid £240!
I then got email confirming this .

The  way it worked for me was I got  the call telling me the engineer would install new boiler over 3 days on the date they told me . I paid the £240 on the phone .
The engineer ( contracted out by eon ) did an amazing job in one day !
In my situation , I got the boiler fitted onky a few days before the first covid lockdown .
    I count my blessings .

The only things I could say regarding the time waiting etc is when you get the call , be prepared to pay the amount on the phone. That phone call is the one that will advise you when the engineer will fit the new boiler in.
Unfortunately covid holds things up .

Just re -reading your post , they are being very proactive and helpful by checking other things that may benefit you .This may/ may not  delay things a little longer .

I was slightly luckier than yourself before I got confirmation ( by email ) from eon, as I managed to talk the engineer out of totally condemning my boiler . I had to keep adjusting the boiler pressure more than once a day at times in the winter. Freezing cold showers and lukewarm washing my plates by hand etc.

Sorry but it doesn't look like there's anymore you can do for now, but carry on struggling for now . Hope you manage best you can .
Regarding price of boiler, I don't know if you have been told but the cost depends on 5he type / size of property etc.  mine was cheap as I'm in a2 bed converted flar.

    Hope this helps ..
