Freezer not working properly in fridge/freezer
I have a Neff built-in fridge/freezer, model K9724X7GB-01. Yesterday we put a lot of new food that we'd just bought in the freezer. A bit later the freezer alarm started sounding to indicate that the temperature was too high. I switched it off, removed the interior back panel that contains the fan and covers the evaporator…

Vaillant Ecotec plus 31kw
My sister is moving into a new house. It has 5 bedrooms over 3 floors (ground, 1st and loft). 4 bathrooms (ground, first x 2 and loft) and 1 kitchen (ground). Only 3 people in the house currently. Would the Vaillant Ecotec plus 31kw (on ground floor) be sufficient to supply the house?

Is it possible to widen a dormer?
I suspect it would make more sense to completely replace it with a wider one for which I would imagine I would planning permission. This situation is I live in a chalet bungalow with a bathroom upstairs which is taken up by the dormer extension which is 10ft wide x 6 ft back to front. The left side is taken up by an airing…

Laying tiles on chipboard flooring.
Has anybody got any experience of laying tiles on to (water resistant) chipboard flooring sheets? The tiles in question are 6" square and about 15 mm thick. Is there a special adhesive that I should use or will the standard stuff be OK. TIA

Is it illegal to install a radiator that cannot be turned of?
Is it illegal to install a radiator that cannot be turned off? I am not sure what they are called but the Radiator that does not have one of those numbered knobs to control the heat. If the Landlord had a new Radiator installed but this time it has no way whatsoever to turn it off, shouldn't that be illegal, especially if…

Loft extension query for the smart!
Hi All, I'm hoping that some MSE wisdom can help us here! We're in a bit of a pickle and I would really appreciate the opinion of those more knowledgeable than myself. We're planning to build a rear dormer loft extension to our mid-terraced house. Our neighbour on 1 side already has a loft extension, which is shown in the…

Travertine Tiles
Has anyone got any experience in cleaning stains from Travertine tiles? These tiles are on a fireplace that has a log burning stove ,( I think is the wrong place for Travertine as I understand they do best in a bathroom or outside). Also they have been cleaned with something like an ordinary household cleaner which has…

Kitchen company not accepting card payment
The company we would like to use to install our new kitchen is a family-run independent (limited company) with a good local reputation. They have a physical address - a kitchen showroom on the outskirts of town. The kitchen designer who visited is also joint diirector. The only reservation I have (and I do find it quite…

Building hallway and reducing lounge size
Hi all, We are in the process of buying a new house, and wanted to ask a question about building a hallway. Currently to get to the kitchen/diner at the back of the house you have to go through the living room. I am trying to figure out whether it is feasible to build a stud wall through the lounge to create a hallway…

Painting Kitchen Cupboards
Hi all, I know there are several threads on this topic but my situation doesn’t quite match any of them. Had a ‘Moden’ kitchen in my new house with laminate doors that had started to pop and were unsalvagable. Unfortunately Moden went out of business many years ago and (Sod’s law) their cabinet and door sizes aren’t…

Cap for washing machine pipe
Hi, whenever we run the kitchen tap, water comes from this pipe which was attached to the washing machine: I want to get a temporary cap to put on it in case the tenants don’t fit a washing machine right away, but I’m not sure what to get or how to do it. It’s 40mm wide so I bought this, but it doesn’t fit at all:…

Stupidly high Wendy House
Hey So, our neighbours has just installed a Wendy House on top of some wooden legs, the windows are above our 6ft fence and importantly can look straight into our kitchen, also means they can look down our garden which is less so important It just looks ugly! I spoke to him about it and he said it's just up for the kids…

Valspar Paint Peeling Off
I've just finished painting around a very large mirror in our downstairs loo using a Valspar tester pot (there's not much wall left to paint so thought this would be ok). The original paint was white matt and the house was new 3 years ago so it's not a problem with the plaster. I'd used Frog tape to mask off the wall,…

Builders retainer fee ?
Hi, I recently had an estimate for building works and paid a 'retainer fee', on the day the work was about to start I was told that I needed building control/regs in place and immediately called builder to clarify, he told me that they would be taking 'photographic evidence' as the work progressed as this was the way it…

Combi boiler, disconnecting booster pump?
Hi, we have recently swapped over from a back boiler, tank, booster pump system to a Combi Boiler for several reasons. British Gas sent a contractor to install it all and it works well. However I did point out to them that there was a shower/bath booster pump in the system which I disconnected the mains supply to. We…

Meter Boxes?
Who installs Meter boxes on the outer walls of houses, mine are quite scruffy looking with the door falling off the gas box. With the meters being in these boxes who actually deals with them, my neighbors are mostly Council or Renting so people just arrive and sort theirs out, i have never had them changed but i notice you…

Slate floor tiles - supplier recommendation request
Hi, Looking for some advice from the mse community. I am looking to buy a reasonable volume (~30m2) of slate flooring, personal preference is for the multi-coloured type. So far I have come up with three potential suppliers but wanted to check for recommendations as all I can go on is online reviews which I personally…

boiler flue regulations
We are thinking of having a conservatory built- but have had varying advice on how near our boiler flue can be to a new structure. Our flue is currently 30cm away from our back door, but if we had a conservatory built it would be 12cm away from the edge of the new structure. One builder has said that's ok, so long as you…
