Freezer not working properly in fridge/freezer

I have a Neff built-in fridge/freezer, model K9724X7GB-01.
Yesterday we put a lot of new food that we'd just bought in the freezer. A bit later the freezer alarm started sounding to indicate that the temperature was too high. I switched it off, removed the interior back panel that contains the fan and covers the evaporator to check if it was iced up, but there was hardly any ice there. Just in case I used a hairdryer to remove the little that was there and then switched it back on. Fortunately our neighbour has a freezer in their garage which had some free space, so we were able to move the food that was already in there. It's now around -14 C but refuses to get any colder than that (I have a separate freezer thermometer). The fan appears to be working correctly and is not obstructed.
One thing that I have noticed is that when I open and then re-close the freezer door, I hear a rather laboured-sounding whirring - so I'm wondering if the compressor has had it.
Any thoughts? Anything else I can do before I have to call someone in to look at it?

Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
