Cap for washing machine pipe

Hi, whenever we run the kitchen tap, water comes from this pipe which was attached to the washing machine:

I want to get a temporary cap to put on it in case the tenants don’t fit a washing machine right away, but I’m not sure what to get or how to do it.
It’s 40mm wide so I bought this, but it doesn’t fit at all: https://www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-t23u-multifit-blanking-plug-white-40mm/96079
Is there anything I can get to just place over the pipe rather than replacing it with a blanking cap? If not, which cap should I get? Thank you

Measure the diameter of the white pipe that is used.
If the 40mm blanking plug does not fit it may be 32mm
You don't say if the one you bought is too big or too small.

I presume that the water leaking is from the kitchen sink drain so you are not dealing with water under pressure.
If the leak is only from the open left end of that fitting, then you could fit a suitably sized bung or wrap some rubber or plastic, (a child's balloon maybe) and secure it with waterproof tape wrapped around the pipe.
That should do the job temporarily.0 -
I had a similar problem when I moved about three years ago. The tenants who had previously rented the house removed the dishwasher but didn't cap the drain.
The pipework in my house is 30 years old, and the connectors under the sink were imperial and not metric.
Could it be that the cap you need is 1½ inches and not 40mm?
I bought a 1½ inch end cap from an on line store selling garden ponds.
Can't remember which site I used, but for example:-
http://www.koicarp.org.uk/koi_plumbing.htm
These are not the ones I bought, but the ones with a jubilee clip are meant to fit metric or imperial.0 -
Unscrew the pipe connector, takr it to B & Q and ask the man or woman in the plumbing dept for a blanking cap to fit the screwed end of the pipe,i know they are not the cheapest but will have the part you need and once fitted you will have no leaks and peace of mind.0

Hi,
first thing is to remove the connector and clean the gunge out, it looks manky, you might find that the down pipe is a mess as well, that can cause smells when using washing machine.0 -
Do you have any of these in your kitchen drawers? (wine bottle stoppers in case you aren't sure !)Perfection takes time: don't expect miracles in a day0

Although if it is an imperial pipe, B&Q won't be able help. They only sell metric sizes.0 -
