Meter Boxes?

Who installs Meter boxes on the outer walls of houses, mine are quite scruffy looking with the door falling off the gas box.
With the meters being in these boxes who actually deals with them, my neighbors are mostly Council or Renting so people just arrive and sort theirs out, i have never had them changed but i notice you can buy them from Screwfix but wouldn't the meter have to be taken out and put back in first?

Depending on what is currently fitted, replacing the box might be a very simple DIY job.
I changed my gas meter enclosure a few years ago and the meter and backplate didn't have to be disturbed and I simply unscrewed the cabinet and dropped on a new one.
This wasn't the exact model I purchased but it's very similar:

    It depends.

I am dealing with one at the minute where moisture ingress has destroyed the board at the back - it has turned to mush and nothing can be screwed to it.

Therefore I have had to get the DSO (ESB) out to de-energise and disconnect their equipment so that the Permali Box can be replaced.

    As the homeowner you do.

Most gas boxes are just a surround so easily replacable. However some like all electric ones will require the meter (and possible supply) removing to replace.

You can book a 2 hour AM removal and 2 hour PM repalcement of the meter to facilitate this.

Or maybe your electric company can put you in touch with the network operator whio might help for a fee.

I had my electric meter moved outside at an old property (old larder window I did not want to get double glazed!). I put in the box, backboard and everything waiting for them to connect the meter. it costs a lot lot more if you want them to do it.

Stick a picture of the inside and outside of your box. Some need the metre and supply removing which isn!!!8217;t diy, others can just be removed without affecting anything.

If you have cavity walls on a home built say 1970-90s then the box is built into the wall. You cannot replace it without seeking competent help. With these boxes replacement doors can be sourced - frequently the doors get damaged over time.

Expect a bit of bodging, or accepting things are not good, if the hinge pin locations are damged on the box. That would mean a new box to properley sort this out,
