Rats in the walls
My daughter and SIL have rats within the walls of their house. Initially, they were in the attic they thought so they put down rat bait over and over again until there was no more signs of them. Shortly after, DD heard them in the walls and (obviously) it's driving them both mad. The got Dynorod out last week (on the…

Kitchen Units - Refurbish or new?
My wife has declared that our kitchen is looking 'tired' and is thinking about replacing the units. It's about 14 years old now. There very minor scratches and on a couple of corners the laminate has started to peel. However, this is mainly the doors and facias. The units themselves are pretty sound apart from a couple of…

New radiator advice?
I have a radiator in the bathroom that needs replacing as its gone rusty etc, bought a very similar size one the other day so all I need to do now is replace it. My DIY skills are pretty much useless, so can anyone advise what is needed to do this and if I called in a professional what sort of ballpark cost it would be?

Fix a drafty UPVC door
Hello, My back/front UPVC doors are a bit drafty - e.g.don't fit perfectly round the edges to seal the doors. I've tried replacing the rubber gaskets but they're still drafty so the 'position' of the doors somehow need altering. Anyway, I'd rather get them fixed rather than replaced if possible (£££!!!) so I'm going to…

Broken Boiler - Eco Grant?
Hi all, My sister in law combi boiler has broken down and two different boiler engineers have stated that its beyond economical repair. She is on child tax credit for her two young children and I recently saw about the boiler scrapage scheme where if you have an inefficient boiler it would be replaced for free. She has…

VAT on electrical certificate for minor works
I'm having a couple of kitchen appliances changed (hob and extractor) and I understand I'll be issued with a certificate of minor works for the electrical element of the work. However the quote I've been given has charged VAT for the certificate. Is this correct? I appreciate any insight.

New boiler and condensate pipe
Hi all, I've just bought a new flat and need a new boiler as the old one's had it. Had an engineer round to survey it and he's telling me I'll have to have an internal condensate pipe installed, running from the boiler to the waste water pipe in the kitchen. The problem is, this is going to mean making a lot of holes and…

Using a pressure washer without an outside tap
Our driveway is an absolute state after having builders in, however they disconnected our outside tap and removed it. Is there any way to connect the pressure washer to the kitchen mixer tap, it would need about 15m of hose though! Or how hard is it to fit an outside tap?

How to make conservatory roof water-tight?
I'm trying to stop water getting in through the roof of a 20-30 year old timber-framed conservatory. It's getting in where the plastic (polycarbonate?) roof sheets meet the wooden bars of the frame (i.e. the glazing bars?). The plastic sheets expand and contract so much in summer that normal silicone sealant doesn't work -…

Double glazing quote - too scared to ask!
I would like a quote to replace all my windows (9) and doors (2). However, I get LOTS of cold-callers and they've all been really pushy, verging on aggressive. So I'm really shy of calling any of these firms! At the moment all I want is a quote so I know how much money I need to save and DON'T want to take out credit. I'm…

Can you get insurance for a construction project?
With house prices going up the way they are, it looks like my wife and I will probably go into the roof instead of buying a bigger home. Especially as we want to complete the mortgage within the next 15 years. We're saving cash for a loft extension but with any major project, there is a concern that whoever we employ to…

Kitchen Cancellation Confusion
So, I ordered a B&Q kitchen a while back, it was about £4k so I got it on 2 years 0% finance, and paid a £1k deposit on it. I then decided to cancel this order (went with Wickes instead), so requested it to be cancelled. They happily cancelled the kitchen and said I'd be refunded to my original payment method (debit card).…

Remote control of heating
Looking for some advice on the above subject, but everything is not straightforward! Let me set the scene..... There are 2 of us who look after setting the heating at our local guide halls. Power socket keeps going to on
Hi Not sure how to explain this, but my consumer unit isn't tripping. It's just a particular socket, when plugged in for a while, the on/off switch keeps going to on (I.e you try to push it to off, it jumps back to on). We've even replaced this particular socket, any ideas? Looks like this is the end of the circuit socket

Leaking under sink
We had a new sink fitted probably about 2 years ago now, thereabouts. All was well until i noticed tonight that it was leaking. It's a bit late to start messing about but it's from the bit i've boxed off. It doesn't seem to be a threaded connection & i've tried turning it just now and it hasn't sorted it. There's a sort of…
