Advice on thermostats and what to buy
Good Evening All, I'd appreciate some advice as I'm not sure what I need or the best way to do it. A couple of years back I had a new boiler fitted - raven heat 780 series. In fitting the new boiler my old thermostat became disconnected and I've lived without one for a couple of years. I'm now out of the house for longer…

Shelf on plasterboard wall with metal.
Just been speaking to BiL. He and sis have just moved into a new build flat. They want to put up a shelf that 140cm long onto a plasterboard wall. BiL has the markings for the drill holes on the wall. The left hand holes are about 30cm away from the corner wall and the drill goes through no problem. The drill on the right…

Dropped Kerb - necessary?
Sorry to ask another dropped kerb question but I cannot find an answer to my specific question. We would like to have a gravelled area at the side of our house (so permeable) to park a motorhome. We would use temporary rubber or wooden ramps to drive over the kerb so as not to damage it which would be removed immediately…

Where do I go?
I am currently in the process of purchasing a new gas fire. I visited a store saw one I liked then someone came out and quoted for fitting it. I queried whether we would need anything doing to the chimney and the man thought not, though he advised we get the chimney swept and suggested a local sweep who they use regularly.…

Hi, I'm planning to insulate our front bedroom, which has two external solid brick walls. I'm going to strip off the lath & plaster and skirting etc over the course of the next few weeks. (not looking forward to that! :( ) After that, I have two options; 1) fit insulated plasterboard, instructions online suggest this…

Cheap kitchens?
I've got my first home and have about 11K to renovate the entire place. It'll be a push, but I think I may be able to manage it. (A lot of friends in trades etc...). Anyway, biggest expense will be the kitchen. There's a few alterations that I'm doing with the kitchen, bricking up the back door (patio doors are being added…

Hi, Would like to have a standard size cooker hood changed for a larger range cooker hood, current one is hardwired and externally vented through the ceiling to outside. Cladding for bathroom
Has anyone decorated their bathroom using upvc cladding? Is it simple to do? Where did you buy it? My bathroom suffers terrible condensation and I have water marks down my walls (plus a child who likes to think he's a bloody killer whale when in the bath!) so was thinking that this may be a solution?

Shower near window in wet room?
We are replacing our shower room. The best plan aesthetically has the UPVC window being within the shower area. The plumber says he often does this and a waterproof blind along with a slightly sloped window ledge solves the problem. Has anyone any experience of this? I'd wondered about replacing the window with one with an…

Who would repair a broken upvc windowsill?
Our windowsill needs replacing. It's bowed because of the heat from the radiator (I presume). Our windows still have the 10 year guarantee, but that company went bust years ago. I called Fensa and they said that the warranty would now be void if the company are no longer trading. I called a double glazing company and they…

does open fire chimney need a cowl?
I am having some work done on my roof at present and the roofer reported that the chimney pot over the living room in my Victorian house is falling to bits. He showed me on some photos and then removed it and brought it down and it is clearly falling to bits. He is replacing it with a tall brick chimney pot. As we have a…

Best Fitted Wardrobe Doors (sliding)
I'm looking to fit some new sliding doors to a walk in type wardrobe arrangement and was wondering if anyone has any particularly good or bad experiences with B&Q, Ikea, etc. I know I'd have to alter the track for any Ikea sliding door but I don't think that's beyond the realm of possibility...

Replacing MR16 spotlight fitting with GU10
So I wanted to replace our halogen bulbs with LED, and smarten up our spotlights with some new housings / fittings. I bought a load of GU10 LED bulbs and some replacement (recessed) spotlight fittings - not intending to mess around with any electricals. But it turns out in the bathroom and kitchen the existing fitting is…
