Shelf on plasterboard wall with metal.

Just been speaking to BiL. He and sis have just moved into a new build flat.

They want to put up a shelf that 140cm long onto a plasterboard wall. BiL has the markings for the drill holes on the wall. The left hand holes are about 30cm away from the corner wall and the drill goes through no problem. The drill on the right side seems to hit a metal sheet. Must be a stud? So moves over a bit. To cut a long story short he’s moved the holes 5, 10, 15, 30cm in each direction and still hits this metal. He’s even gone up 10cm and still hits it. The other side of the wall is a corridor.

He’s called me in frustration but I have no diy skills and just thought water pipe or electricity cable! Anyone know what a likely large sheet of metal is going in the gap?
Thanks
