New underlay & carpet over old carpet (trying to soundproof))
Hi, I am trying to stop TV noise going from the living room to the upstairs bedroom which is directly above the TV as it affects sleep when me or partner are working different hours. We are having new carpets and underlay soon, so I was thinking if it would be ok to put the new underlay over the top of the old carpet, then…

Bathroom places Hornchurch
Hello everyone, This is a bit of a long shot I guess, however, I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for bathroom shops which would serve the Hornchurch area. That's Essex/East London approximately. I have one place coming (this evening actually) but I want others for comparison. At the moment I'm just having a…

Recommend a dehumifier
I've just moved into a ground floor flat and I am worried about mould and damp, especially since I will be drying clothes in the flat. Can anyone recommend a dehumifier for running in the rooms I will be drying clothes in. Budget up to £200.

Should a master socket have a dial tone
Guys, If I get a simple corded phone should I hear a dial tone if I connect it to the BT master socket? - The house I have taken on used to have Virgin Media, I'm not sure if I should expect a dial tone or if I'd need to get the phone connected again (not that I'd choose Virgin Media). What about if I plugged it into the…

DIY Dishwasher repair - advice
Hi, I have aCurrys Essentials CDWTT11 Tabletop dishwasher. Which has recently stopped working, or rather works very intermittently. The error symbol (flashing 3 in 1 light) indicates that the problem is with the flow meter. The dishwasher was fairly cheap and a gift, so I don't really think it is worth calling someone out…

installing electric shower - drilling holes
Next project :) I'm replacing the electric shower. It seems doable but the problem I have is that the after marking out the holes they are pretty much straight above the water & electric entry points. From what I can see at least the electric comes from straight up so I'm worried about going through them.

Building Work and Replacement Window
About 12 years ago I had a small internal wall taken down in my kitchen, I didn't even think about any building consent and neither did the builder mention it! It sounds a bit ridiculous now, but I am about to sell my house and I am fretting that it is something I should declare or do something about. Everyone keeps…

Purpose of key locking on windows?
I was wondering what is the purpose of key locking on house windows? Once the handle of a window is pushed into the correct position the window is closed and cannot (in theory) be opened from the outside. But some/many window handles also have a key to lock them internally. Is this to stop someone from getting out, or what…

whats best to re'grout' a patio?
finally pressure washed the ancient patio we inherited when we moved, and its blown out all of the old grout/filling between the slabs. I assumed its best to use kiln dried sand, and brush it in but a friend said use cement as it'll keep the old slabs together better, whats peoples opinions on each method please?

Tarmac damage from skip company
Hi, Just had my patio redone and when the skip company picked up the skip it all went wrong. Last new I had my drive redone and extended with tarmac and paving edge. When the skip truck picked up the skip it twisted and hit the neighbours fence and the seems to have bounced back onto the tarmac ripping it up. I have all…

Time for a complete rewire?
House build around 1970, still has original electricity meter, fuse boxes, etc. As part of a general upgrade, we are installing an electric shower & also having extra plug sockets installed in a couple of rooms. The kitchen is also due a refit. Just wondered (given the age of the house) whether we should be thinking about…

Room Decoration - Peeling Blasterboard
Hi We recently moved into a property and have commenced decorating one of the bedrooms to be a nursery for our 6 month old. Upon scraping the existing wallpaper off we've discovered a few things. Not all of the walls are of the same material - one is plastered concrete (the partition between us and the next house) Two are…

How much to invest in home renovations
My partner and I recently purchased our first house (2 bed Victorian terrace in London) and have been slowly renovating the place over the last 6-8months. As the renovation costs start to add up, I was keen to get some advice on how much we should continue spending on the renovation given a) the ceiling price of the house…

Carpet fitting:shop or fitter?
We need to carpet our hall and corridor(about 40 sq.m). Our corridor have "mat well" and a door between hall and corridor might need to be eased for clearance for carpet. Our budget is around 1000 pounds We found independent shops are expensive. In carpet right, there are not many options in our budget. We are inclined to…

Boiler not maintaining hot water
I've just moved into a property which has an Ariston gas combi boiler (any sticker with the model number has been removed...helpful). When any hot tap is turned on full power, it is unable to maintain the temperature. It will fire up, get up to temperature and then switch off the heat. And then fire up as soon as it drops.…

Hairline cracks in reskim
Hi, We had our living room skimmed last November and the job seemed great. We followed all advice regarding painting ie mist coatband sufficient drying time. Over the last week though I have noticed 3/4 hairline cracks on the wall towards the corner of the room, around 3 feet above the radiator. They are diagonal and vary…

TV over radiator dilemma?
Hi all, We would like to replace the tall, thin radiator in our bedroom (which is going rusty) with a new, lower & wider one - say about hip height, and then mount a TV on a multi-directional bracket above the radiator higher up the wall. What are the implications of rising heat near the TV itself, and can we avert any…
