Carpet fitting:shop or fitter?

We need to carpet our hall and corridor(about 40 sq.m). Our corridor have "mat well" and a door between hall and corridor might need to be eased for clearance for carpet. Our budget is around 1000 pounds

We found independent shops are expensive. In carpet right, there are not many options in our budget. We are inclined to get the carpets and other supplies and find a fitter to do the job. What do fellow members think?

  • most store carpet fitters are self employed and are the same ones you will find in the yellow pages, cut price carpet stores make up the profits by charging a lot for fitting etc, although united carpets usually offer free fitting if you buy the underlay from them

Have you a shop called J W's Carpets near you. Try them for your carpet. I personally bought Treadaire dreamwalk (12mm thick) from the well known auction site and was not disappointed - once this has been used you will not order/use anything else, but to buy from the well known shop will cost you almost double. As for carpet fitters, I got a rogue one by phoning and arranging one myself. Told the carpet shop what happened and they said - did you get the number from us? No - I didn't - Because if you had we would have got it fixed for you. So I would go with the shop fitter, that way if anything should go untoward, they would hopefully correct it.
