Anyone got a Miele or Samsung Tall fridge?
Fridge freezer packed up this morning  Well, when I say packed up, read went topsy-turvey = my ice cream is liquid and my milk is solid. It's Hotpoint and it's getting on for a 9 years old, so I imagine it will be impossible to get it fixed, so I'm browsing the web for a replacement. We don't really need a…

Wood cut to size?
I need to get some supports to put underneath the central support of my bed (at the moment there is none and it bows a bit, so the bed bows in the middle). I was thinking of just getting a couple of bits of square timber to put underneath. However, I do not have saws etc to cut anything to size, so I want to go somewhere…

Boiler Help
I need some help I recently bled all my radiators and then topped the pressure back up but since I did that I can't get the settings right on the pipe under the boiler. Sometimes I have heating but the boiler seems like its gonna take off, other times I have no heating but hot water and sometimes I have neither. I can't…

replacing kitchen cabinet doors
My kitchen needs updating but I can't afford a whole refit. It's going to be painted and wouldn't mind replacing all cabinet doors to white ones and the surfaces are in some old dark blue/grey stone effect and wouldn't mind replacing with some cheap solid wood version, maybe beach. Are there any places that would come out…

Removing Paint from stone window sills and repainting
Hi, I'm trying to remove the old flaky paint from my bay window sill so I can repaint it. It's a victorian terrace with stone sills at front of house. The loose paint was quite easy to scrape off using a paint scraper but the rest of the paint is proving tricky to remove. What is the best way to do this? Should I sand over…

Mirror Window Film
I live in a ground floor flat rented from housing association. I have blinds and curtains on all windows. As a result privacy is an issue. In order to stop people seeing in I have to have blinds closed during the day. However, this means I also cannot see out. As a result I am looking at alternatives. I have tried frosted…

How to find local handymen?
I'm sure this has been discussed to death and the best way is probably word of mouth. The one tradesman that we were very happy with and has done jobs for us before (and who had also agreed to do a big project for us this time) is delayed on a previous job. He can't recommend anyone either as all his trusted guys are busy…

Solid surface kitchen worktop and sinks?
We're looking at getting a solid surface in our kitchen, although we're running into a bit of an issue. Were looking at the DIY ones - Maia, Magna etc as these are just under £2k which is within budget. These are the ones where there is a 6mm - 26mm 'veneer' of solid surface mounted on chipboard. Full 30mm solid becomes…

Paint for first furniture repaint project
I have an Edwardian style leather-top pedestal desk that I'm going to sand back and paint as it's in a poor state. The desk gets a lot of use. I'm tempted to use F&B Estate Eggshell because the product info and reviews suggest it's hard-wearing and so wouldn't need varnishing. 2-3 coats of varnish on the whole desk would…

Water softener and drinking tap
Just installed a water softener system and realised too late that it may not be the best water for drinking :o IS there a simple under sink filter system I can use to remove the sodium? Also, I don't want to drill another hole in my granite worktop for a drinking water tap so can I use a 3 way type tap (just had a brief…

I have replaced my warm air heating with a combi and radiators and was wondering whether to fill in the vents above the bedroom and lounge doors or not. Will the house benefit from this ventilation or will it be detrimental?

Suggestions needed to fill very deep crevice
I had another recent thread here about an ex boiler-cupboard to shower conversion. The project has been finished and the shower overall looks quite good, but the shower tray is fitted onto a 1cm thick piece of plywood, and there are gaps in places between the plywood and the floor, which I can slide a 12in ruler all the…

Hello all I'm looking to replace a single pane window that is made with a timber frame to a double glazed window with a timber frame (with frosted glass). Window is downstairs and 43x53cm. Tumble dryer won't start
Not sure whether this is the right place to post this, but we have a miele t284 tumble dryer ( not very MSE I know) and it has just stopped working. Went to put some bedding in there today and all the lights come on and behave like the drum should be going round but it doesn't. I have read the manual, been on the miele…

Creaky floorboards
I have very creaky floorboards, they look good after sanding and we want to preserve them as they were installed when the house was first built in the 1920s. Any suggestions as to where I would start or who to ask about making them not creaky anymore? We have rugs, they help. But it's still creak creak creak!
