Reupholstering leather suite
We have a leather suite with a sofa and two arm chairs. It is 12 years old, but a decent quality one. Inherited it with the house we bought. The previous owners cat has scratched the arms quite badly (ripped). Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to get the arms reupholstered? (All six of them!) We love the…

Which combi boiler
Hi, Really keen to hear your opinion as to which combi boiler is best out of Ideal Logic Plus 30 or Baxi Duotec 28. Three local firms have all given prices for the above two boilers in my price range (fairly limited budget.) Both boilers are currently coming with seven year manufacturers warranty. There is literally only…

Help with a PIV - will it work in this setup?
Hi Guys, I need to pick your brains before getting a PIV unit. (and it maybe not working!) Our rented bungalow seems just not to have any airflow. None whatsoever. Even with its working chimneys and windows always being cracked open... air just stays dead still. (it’s also enclosed by a large copse of trees so is dark,…

Help! What Am I Looking For - Hob burner Slate disc
I have a six burner integrated gas hob in my rented property. Like an idiot, I accidentally threw away the smallest slate disc that is placed on the hob burner (the gas flame burns around it) when cleaning. Its approximately 5cm in diameter. I've looked on ebay and amazon, but can't find what I am looking for. Its a flat…

Subsidence or something else?
I have a semi that was built circa 1952. Only found out by accident (having new electrics) that I have a basement that covers the whole of the ground floor. There is no access apart from taking up floorboards. The house is quite cold which I'm assuming is from the basement below so will probably think about some kind of…

Boiler replacement
Looking for a bit help / advice regarding a boiler replacement We moved house before Xmas and our new home as a Baxi Solus 2 boiler which is around 25 years old. It works well enough bar the pilot light going out a couple of times. However it doesn’t seem that efficient (gives off a lot of heat) and is located under the…

Whose responsibility is this gulley?
The gulley between my utility room (serves washing machine and two sinks only) and the main sewer in the pedestrian lane outside my house has collapsed and everything points to the damage being caused by a sub-contractor relaying a larger gas pipe on behalf of British Gas. A mini digger was used to dig the trench and a…

Smoke alarms
One of the smoke alarms started to beep the last couple of days (was told by mum) so I knew I needed to change the batteries. Got three in our long hallway of the bungalow. So looking up the cost of batteries and that two of the units are over 10 years old and taking 2 batteries each, it works out better to replace them.…

Double door and rad removed
Hi all, A bit of advice on some work that could come around. A bit of a backstory. We saw a great house for sale, we initially we turned it down due to the naff kitchen and separate dining space (we always preferred kitchen / dining as LO can be at the table when dinner is made etc.) Being as it is the very top of our…

Flat Roof
Hi, I would like to extend my existing roof (3 meters in depth) with a slope of 8 cm further another 3 meters. So, basically it will be a 6 meters depth roof. It is a flat roof. However, I am not sure if existing height of the roof is going to allow further slope. Is there any regulations in terms of the thickness of the…

Stencil for glass door - artwork
Just moved into a house with a glass door. It's a nice feature but we have kids and want to put something on it to make sure the kids don't walk into it. Or me, to be honest! We'd assumed we'd just put a simple stencil stripe up but then started to think about whether we could get some of our own artwork done into a…

dishwasher or hand wash?
If the plumbing and affordability is there, is it more energy and cost and water efficient to install a dishwasher than hand wash? Just wondering if initial outlay would be worth it in a single person apartment. Thanks

Need some sort of metal mesh... What am I looking for?
We have an inset gas fire (not working, never used) with a large opening up into the chimney. We had to cover the fire when we got a cat as he kept trying to climb up into the chimney and left sooty paw-prints around the lounge. I want to see the fire again, even though it's unused and decorative. So, I plan to clean as…

New plaster
I'm aware that new plaster will crack a little over time and we let it dry then applied two mist coats of watered down trade emulsion before 'normal' paint but how much cracking is reasonable? It's mostly at edges, but there are also a number of fairly large circular 'nail pops' over the plasterboard screws (50 size) that…

Welding glass
Apparently you can view the coming solar eclipse directly through #14 welding glass. However, this shade is much dearer than lighter shades which are available for 99p per sheet on ebay. Can anyone tell me if you can combine multiples of the lighter shades to arrive at a #14 equivalent?
