Welding glass

Apparently you can view the coming solar eclipse directly through #14 welding glass. However, this shade is much dearer than lighter shades which are available for 99p per sheet on ebay. Can anyone tell me if you can combine multiples of the lighter shades to arrive at a #14 equivalent?

Shade 13 is the strongest common lens, I'm not sure why you would need to go higher to look at the sun?

I have various helmets that are rated for welding at 500amps the intensity of the light will fade red from overalls in a few hours, and require glove changes every few minutes, they only go upto 13.

Shaded glass is old hat in the welding industry, it now tends to be all auto lenses.
