New plaster

I'm aware that new plaster will crack a little over time and we let it dry then applied two mist coats of watered down trade emulsion before 'normal' paint but how much cracking is reasonable?

It's mostly at edges, but there are also a number of fairly large circular 'nail pops' over the plasterboard screws (50 size) that have appeared over 3 months or so.

I'm wondering if we're going to have to ask the plasterers back via the builder or whether it's a suck it up, get the filler in and paint over it job

Sounds like they not scrimmed properly over the screws. Also normally either at plasterboard edges, ceiling meets wall, and above doors where the impact of door closing will crack.

Rake out and fill. I always use gyproc easyfill. Never had it crack again. With the wall and ceiling tape it off and easy fill to feather it in. As for screws??

Easy fill but probably more likely to crack again. Rake out a small area around screws and stick some scrim over screws, again easyfill to cover. Blends in with plaster and so easy to sand.

Thanks for the reply- will share this info with OH, and pass on to builders that their plasterer is naff (we suspected anyway given the fuss they made about doing anything much)
  • I had my entire house replastered, both ceilings and walls. As I can see there is now a bit of cracking emerged since (ie around ceiling edges/the odd bit on central ceiling/around door edging) then I am wondering how long to expect to notice "new" cracking before, as it doesn't seem worth trying to put matters right until I'm sure the cracking has finished.

We painted some rooms within weeks, some within 3 months now, and we're still noticing new cracks. However, depends on whether your plasterers were any better than mine I guess....

Unless done properly they will almost always appear. I would not give it a set time. Kids jumping upstairs or wandering around the loft. It the expanding and shrinkage of surround materials. Wood etc. ..mostly poor workmanship I there never seems to be any corner tape on the wall to ceiling, just straight plaster.

When you decorate a room just sort it out then. We moved to new house in December. I noticed one room with cracking. Now every room has it. Ceilings, doors plasterboard joins.. Just about to get stuck into the front room. The rest can wait until I sort them out.

Unfortunately most of the new rooms are already decorated. And it's taken blinking long enough already
