Lights keep failing
We live in a 1950's semi with a ELCB board and presumably relatively modern wiring... About 2 months ago - our bedroom light failed - I changed the bulb - no effect (the bulb was still OK) - Then, as quickly as it failed, it started working again (and has done ever since) This morning - the same thing happened to our…

PRV replaced but water still leaking from boiler
As per the title I have a Ferroli Domina N80 boiler, I have recently had the expansion vessell replaced (as the diapraghm had split) and had the relief valve replaced also. However, there is still water leaking out via the relief valve. Any suggestion as to what could be causing this? Thanks

Do you always lose toilet facilites on a bathroom refurb?
Just wondered , one plumber who has quoted our bathroom rip out and refurb says he will leave us the toilet each night , and another has said we will need a chemical toilet or portaloo for a few days? Is it just dependant on how each person works? Thanks

Electrical Question
I have noticed that the consumer unit in the house has 16A MCB for the garage circuit. The CU in the garage has a 32A MCB for the sockets. Both are on RCD. Should they both have the same rated MCBs ? and is there any issue with two RCDs? I would be grateful for advice.

After eight years coving and other bits falling
I'm curious why some coving and the decorative top to a built-in wardrobe should have fallen down recently. The top is the moulding affixed to the wall between the cupboard and the coving above. The cupboard is in one room, and the fallen coving in another room directly back to back. It cannot be bad workmanship as both…

Replace analogue central heating timer
Hi I work for a charity working in a building with a very old central heating system. It still works (and we can't afford to have it replaced!) but we need to change the old dilapidated analogue rotary timer with a 7 day timer to cut back on costs. It's a Grasslin Towerchron (that's what it says on the box) with blue and…

Putting the wall back
As part of my seemingly never ending hunt for a house I have seen a place that has a through room. I am not into modern open plan living. I would prefer two small but decent sized rooms to one long thin one. Presumably it is easier to put a dividing wall back than it was to knock it down in the first place. Does anyone…

Repairing a Fire-Back with Fireplace Render
I have a Fire-Back (cast concrete type or whatever it is) in my open fire which is used quite often in the winter and it has seen better days. There is a large crack now running up the bottom half and this is crumbling away. I'm looking at ways of repairing it as opposed to replacing it at the moment (Christmas and all…

Back boiler replacement
After living with our old back boiler for two years I'm thinking of getting it replaced and would appreciate some advice on a value for money replacement. Initially we were intending to keep the existing Baxi Bermuda SL3 as the gas engineer advised to as in his opinion they are reliable and tend to be trouble free. Also we…

Radiator cold at bottom
One of my radiators is warm at the top yet cold at the bottom. I tried bleeding it and there was no air escaping - the water started to come out straight away so I tightened it right back up again. It has made no difference even after I gave it some time. Any advice please?

Upholstery cleaning service recommendations, SE London/Kent
Can anybody recommend an upholstery cleaning company that is reasonably close to the borders of SE London/Kent? I've had one quote, which with Scotchguarding is close to £300 which has come as quite a shock. It's a very good quality suite, so definitely worth paying for, but didn't quite expect it to be that much. I was…

Converting Trevi boost shower to Trevi therm
I currently have a trevi boost shower but now I'm replacing my old boiler with a combi, so will no longer have a hot water cylinder. Can anyone let me know how much work is involved to convert the shower from a trevi boost to trevi therm. I know the conversion kit is about £200 but have no idea how much a plumber will…

Combi boiler
I have a thermostat on the wall and the boiler is only turned off from this to nought if we are not here. I have set it to 18 degrees and the boiler has not stopped since I put it on earlier. My room temperature gauge says it is 21 degrees so why does the boiler keep going and not cut off. I am only asking as I am aware of…

Spilled engine oil on laminate floor
I recently moved a crate that had a bottle of engine oil in it in my conservatory. Unfortunately, it seems the bottle had a split and engine oil had been leaking all over the floor. I soaked up what I could with kitchen towel but I have been unable to remove the stain from the laminate floor. Does anyone have any…
