Help with screws, plugs and drill bits
I've bought a wall mount for my xbox and my tv. The Xbox mount came with wall plugs which say 10x50mm and I would have thought to use a 10mm drill bit but instructions say to use 8mm? The TV mount didn't come with any wall plugs, the screws are 7mm wide so what size plugs do I need? Thanks

Filling the Gap under the counter
I've rented a house that benefits from a utility room. The washing machine and fridge freezer are better located in the utility room but it leaves me with three huge gaps under the counter. I'm desperate for space for pots and pans. We have used a few banana boxes to create something that helps but I want something that is…

Recommended Toilet/Shower Brands?
I was wondering if people had any specific experiences/recommendations regarding toilets and showers? We are renovating the bathroom and I am conscious that these are the most 'functional' parts. I had a Roca toilet put in last time but the flush (dual button on top) gave up a couple of years in and was endless…

Lawn being eaten
Our lawn is being eaten from within - by cranefly larvae I think that the only answer is to employ several million namatodes - unless it is too late Any advice welcome Cranefly (daddy longlegs) lay their egg which pupate into HUNGRY larvae which then munch on the grass roots - leaving large expanses of dead grass !!

I'm not sure if this is the right place? Over the last year or so I've been getting increasing amounts of post for people who don't and have never lived at this address, and I've no idea who they are. these range from utilities (british gas), pension and other financial companies and the latest one from someone who appears…

Boiler Controllers
I have a 10 year old Alpha Combi Boiler and the controller looks like it was used to close the doors of Noah's Ark. So 2 questions really 1) Do I need to have one of Alpha's controllers, or can I swap it out with a for example Danfoss controller? 2) Can you DIY it or do you need a Gas Safe accredited installer or Part P…

New bathroom - building regs?
Hi all - hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can help with some confusing regulations! We are looking to install a bathroom in what is currently a study/bedroom upstairs in our house. Will involve running a new soil pipe down the side of the house as the current bathroom is downstairs right at the back of the house.…

New victorian front door - help
I need to replace the front door of my traditional victorian house, and after getting a few quotes from local reputable companies, it looks like a quality custom made door is around £1500-£2000. This is a lot more than I can afford. I then turned to the off-the-shelves option, and stumbled upon 2 companies that had the…

Toilet 100mm soil pipe under concrete floor
I would be grateful if anyone could share their views on whether the below suggestion is doable and makes sense. What I want to do is to increase the size of the second bedroom (which is very small at the moment and can only accommodate a child) and make the bathroom smaller as a result. To make it possible (i.e. having a…

Mites in flour
I have a cupboard where I keep my flour, sugar and other dry goods. It is on the opposite side of the kitchen from the oven but next to one of the fridges so not sure it is might be a bit warm from that. Anyway, I went to make a cake today but when I opened the flour bag (already been opened), there were some little grey…

Leaking Hot Water Cylinder
Hi, My hot water cylinder has developed a leak at one of the inlets. I got a plumber over to have a look at it and he said the cylinder was "furring" and that it was best to have it changed. He quoted £450 for supply and fit. I would appreciate the feedback of any other tradesmen regarding the possibility of repairing the…

Advice for heat resistant tiling around fireplace
We want to give our fireplace a facelift. As you can see, it's currently a brick affair - what we want to do is put a wooden fire surround and tile the surfaces inside the surround. What I am concerned about are the two surfaces that are exposed to the direct heat of the fire. What I would like to know is whether I will…

Toilet roll holder. Help!
Hi all, Wondering if any competent DIY'ers (which I definitely am not!) could help me. I'm trying to tighten my extremely loose toilet roll holder, but can't see any way of doing it. Pictures should show how wonky it is, and the fixture at the bottom, which I was expecting to be a screw, but instead is just a little metal…

Laying and cutting laminate flooring
After getting a quote for laying laminate flooring I have decided to DIY. What is the best tool to cut the laminate, one of these circular saws advertised on TV for cutting the flooring? If I bought one I would still pay less than what I was quoted for someone to lay it. Then I could try and sell it on Ebay. The only…
