After replacing it, buying the remaining hoses etc...and turning on the machine, water leaked from the bottom. It is not from the pipe i did replace , nor from…

Loft insulation - preventing condensation?
I need to install loft insulation and have been reading about the various problems with potential condensation. The loft is currently cleared and the eaves are well ventilated. The roofing felt looks to be in good condition with no noticable breaks. The only thing I cannot see is how the roof can breath at the top of the…

House security alarms
I could use some advice or pointers on what to look for with regards to security alarms please. Just beginning to look into this subject and it seems quite varied in spec and price. I'd like the ability to remotely monitor the house if that's possible. Not sure what that entails in practice, but assume it means I can log…

Tree Surgeon damaged fruit tree
Hello Would appreciate some rapid advice as I'm going to meet the tree surgeon at lunchtime today to negotiate payment! We arranged for a tree surgeon to remove 3 very large Leylandii trees from our property - we've just bought it and they were massively overgrown. A three day job to remove them, we were told... Anyway the…

Opinions on new stairs
Considering stairs for my new build. I dont want anything as traditional as wooden spindles, but dont want anything too modern, nor the expense and cleaning required of glass. The stairs are straight, so I was thinking of a combination of these.…

double glazing with blinds inside, any good?
Hi we are thinking of changing our old battered back doors for aluminium bi-folding doors and the sun streams in through this side of the house so we are tempted to get the doors with integral blinds, we have seen them in a couple of places. It seems they are controlled by magnets, is this any good, how else could they be…

How much does it cost to move a boiler from a bedroom to the kitchen?
We need to move a boiler from our child's bedroom from upstairs to the downstairs kitchen. The boiler is 4 years old. We've been quoted approx £1200-£1400, this feels a bit steep to me as I know someone that got one moved for £800. What would be a fair price? There are so many cowboys out there, wanted to be sure. It isn't…

Loft insulation
Hi Just wanted to clarify a few things re insulating the loft. Just refurbed a 1920's house but the loft hasn't been insulated yet, a small amount of insulation is up there but pretty filthy and manky stuff. I came across lots of sites talking about grants in my area but not sure if I qualify. I certainly wouldn't qualify…

What kitchen worktop?
I am planning a new kitchen and currently considering which type of worktop would best suit. I want to have an undermounted sink, which I think rules out wood, and want better quality than laminate. Something solid. But obviously, I am looking for something as cheap as possible. Is there anything in the £200-£250 per 2.4m…

Anyone know of an elec hob for 53.5x45cm hole please?
Hi, I need to replace an electric hob but am having difficulty finding one with the same size cut out hole (or slightly smaller) as all the new hobs I've checked so far as min 55cm cut out width. Unfortunately I can't just get the hole cut larger as the kitchen was (badly) designed with the hob right next to the end of one…

another olft insulation q, should I get rid of existing
the existing insulation is less than 5cm thick, filthy, fibreglass/mineral wool (i'm assuming, it was old and filthy when we moved in 11 years ago). I've got new to put between the joists and a top layer to overlay - Is there any benefit to overlaying the new on the old, or am I better off getting rid of it?

How often do you decorate?
Title says it all really! Just wondering as I think the kids rooms need redoing after 3 years. They're all scuffed and grimy and I think we should be repainting. DH feels they have only just been done and doesn't want to do them again. So, how often do you guys do it?
