How often do you decorate?

Title says it all really! Just wondering as I think the kids rooms need redoing after 3 years. They're all scuffed and grimy and I think we should be repainting. DH feels they have only just been done and doesn't want to do them again.
So, how often do you guys do it?

I wouldn 't redecorate anything unless it needed doing.

I decorated from scratch 2 years ago. I was speaking to the builder who did some work, and he saod people redecorate every 3 years. I thought, and I still think, he was taking the mickey, and touting for work.

if it isnt broke I dont fix it...some rooms have been decorated the same for 10 years or so....although a lot depends on how you've originally decorated IMO.

wall paper lasts far longer than paint ...but having said that it also depends what room you are talking about...our kitchen was done 3 years ago and really could do with doing again soon whereas the diining room side looks as good today as when it was done 7 years ago

We have just magnolia..ed a rental property and fingers crossed we wont be re doing the whole house for another 3 years or so

  • I really want to redecorate my living room, I hate the colour I chose 2 years ago. Normally I would leave it for about 5 years, but can't stand the dreary colour anymore.

Starting from freshly painted, I'd not decorate for 15-20 years, maybe longer, but then I'm not a grimey, grubby scuffer.

I know my grandmother said she used to redecorate every three years, this would have been in the 1950s-70s so maybe that was normal for the fashion conscious at one time. It would mainly have involved new wallpaper and I guess would have been for fashion rather than because it was getting shabby.

  • I've just painted the lounge and the bedroom needs doing next - but I need to seal the walls with that damp proof stuff first. Then the skirting and doors need glossing but thats a messy job and I hate it. If I don't get bored with the teal, brown, cream thing I've got going on the in the lounge then I probably won't change anything until either we move, or I am fed up of it. And even then I don't know what I'd want to do with it...
