House security alarms

I could use some advice or pointers on what to look for with regards to security alarms please.
Just beginning to look into this subject and it seems quite varied in spec and price.
I'd like the ability to remotely monitor the house if that's possible. Not sure what that entails in practice, but assume it means I can log in somewhere on the net and check the footage?
This isn't something I know anything about at all so I'd welcome anyone's input/thoughts/experiences re: systems and costs.

There have been quite a few threads on here previously asking about which alarm to choose etc.
Do you want to be notified of alarms by text message or also be able to monitor CCTV cameras too?If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
Apologies for not acknowledging your post sooner, I was away for a couple of days.
I have no pre conceived set 'wants' as such. As I said, the idea is in it's infancy and I was hoping people would express suggestions.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Most modern DVR CCTV systems allow you to connect them to your Broadband connection to monitor remotely.
Will you be installing it yourself?
As a starting point on alarm systems that you can control with a smart phone, have a look at the Response range:

British Gas also offer a simple self-installation system. You do have to pay an £8 per month charge to receive SMS alerts:

You will most-likely be paying over £300 for a professional alarm system and depending on your technical knowledge, may require a professional to install it for you.
If you want a reduction on your insurance, you have to choose a NACOSS approved installer and an appropriate alarm. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -

I hadn't thought about installation yet. I networked our house previously so I wouldn't be put off by a self install, however the insurance aspect is worth considering so I will look into the approved options.

You def. want a IP camera facility you can access from your mobi. My alarm phones my mobi when it's triggered and it was always a 'mare not being able to see what was happening until I put in two IP cams. Thankfully always false alarms, usually spiders walking across the face of the movement detectors.
Depends how fancy you want to get, I quite like the idea that when someone presses the entry intercom you are called and speak to them via your mobi.0
