Efflorescence
I noticed a couple of days ago I had this white, fluffy thing had appeared on the inner wall of my porch just underneath the window. After a bit of reasearch, it looks as though it could be efflorescence. Below is a photo of it. Do you think the cause of this is because I haven't got a window sill fitted? And if I do fit…

Second hand cooker help with oven temperature
Hi there, I have been given a Hotpoint Creda electric cooker with double oven; there is no model number sticker on the inside, on the outside it says Collections 6DOC. I cannot see where the oven temperature display is, and it does not look like it has been wiped off the dial but I don't know. There is also an electronic…

Plaster/render around fireplace
I've removed the fire back and rubble from my fireplace to reveal the builders opening, as I want to have a stove installed. I will install a slabbed granite hearth, and probably get a wood fire surround. The wall is flat up to the edge of the opening. At present the walls are plastered, with ~1cm pink undercoat plaster…

Distributing Television To Several Rooms
We have four televisions in our house which are watched regularly and I have had this hairbrained idea that I want to be able to watch everything on every television. Also I am sick of all the cables draped inside and outside the house. At the moment we have European satellite to one tv, Sky multiroom to 2 tvs and then…

I need help to find cheap exterior doors which are not a standard size please.
In the recent storms our front and back porch doors blew apart. because the timber was rotten it is not possible to repair them. As it is absolutely freezing here and we really have no spare cash I need to find a way to replace them at minimal cost. They did at least act as a wind break and gave a bit of insulation against…

Wallstar boiler needed reseting
My Wallstar boiler needed the reset switch pressing about the start of December 2011 and it's just gone again. It works when it is reset, I just wonder why it goes off? It's about 9 years old, wasn't serviced this year. Any ideas, is it normal? Or should I be calling someone in?

Repair bathroom window rot?
The lower transom of the opening light of the window has got a bit of rot, presumably from water condensing on the glass and then draining down onto the wood and the wood not being sealed. It is only about 10mm wide, is there a simple repair that i can do of some sort? Any suggestions? TIA.

How to remove washing tablet smell from matress and swivel chair fabric?
I am new to cleaning so please forgive me for my absolute stupidity and suicidal cleaning methods. I had some stains on my part of my matress and the fabric on my computer swivel chair. Stupidly I got some washing tablet liquids, opened them and immersed them in water. I then dipped a cloth in the water and proceeded to…

Paper hanging on one wall?
Hi, I know there are some older posts about paper hanging... but how much approximately would it cost to have one wall papered? It's roughly 4m by 4m. I already have wallpaper, which is ready lined, so it's really just the job of putting it up (which I'm rubbish at!). Many thanks :) P.S. I'm in the South East - I know the…

Shower not working
Hi My electric shower stopped producing hot water a couple of mornings ago. I noticed the RCD had tripped. Having reset this, the red light on the switch comes only but only luke warm water comes out. Eventually, it gets cold. What should I do. Replace the entire shower unit or just a part. I'm wondering whether the…

Odd freezer behaviour
a couple of times recently my fridge freezer has turned itself off. It's not huge problem - I use it daily, notice when the light is out, and a switch off and on at the wall fixes it. But what causes it? Could it be related to light blulbs blowing? (I do not think they are on the same circuit though) Any answers welcome!

We had a new double glazed patio door fitted just over a year ago but I've noticed a problem with it being really draughty.
