TRV's on lounge and bedroom radiators?

I have got a couple of quotes now for a combi boiler replacement, both are similar so far, waiting for a third tomorrow to compare.
I have a question though about TRV (thermostatic radiator valves).
I have a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom flat, with a lounge and kitchen too. There are 2 radiators in teh lounge, 1 in the bedroom, 1 in the hall and a towel radiator in the bathroom. The chaps who came round suggested I would only need fit the TRV's to the lounge and bedroom radiators. I'm wondering if it's worth it on any of them seeing as my flat is quite small. What are the benefits?

I would fit them all the radiators you can afford to fit them on.

The benefits are that you can control the temperature of each room individually.

Granted most of my problems with house temperatures have been in larger properties which don't have them they are still useful in smaller properties.

For example if you need a warm lounge but prefer a cooler temperature in your bedroom so you can get off to sleep you can turn your bedroom radiator down, or say if you are cooking in the kitchen and it's really hot there you can turn that radiator down but leave the rest of the flat at the temperature of the thermostat.

The other alternative is just not to have a thermostat and have TRVs on all your radiators but this can be annoying.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

They enable you to have different temperatures in each room and prevent you overheating a room which will save you money. For the relatively small extra cost I would fit them on all radiators.

You don't really have any choice in the the matter. The Domestic Services Compliance Guide http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/domestic_building_compliance_guide_2010.pdf
is quite clear (despite meeting plumbers that have never heard of this document most days, there was a 2006 version which was much the same.)

You have to have TRV's except on rooms with a room thermostat and no requirement in bathrooms (but I would have one). You can't just have TRV's either. There must be a boiler interlock to turn it off if there is no demand.

This presumes that your flat is under 150m sq (which is very likely) other wise you need zone control on your heating.

Sorry, but what is a boiler interlock please?

  • So the regs say they are recommended but not mandating when replacing the boiler. If I was to replace the radiators as well, then it would be mandated?

This is a boiler replacement NOT a system replacement.

    Cheers

Edit: CH got there first. BTW Depending on which version it might be on P24.

Good practice is the expression. Radiators like the boiler are system components. A system replacement would be the whole lot including the pipework, controls etc.

Control system installation that operates in such a way that if there is no call for heat the boiler doesn't flash up. Obvious really and pretty common or garden but just another term.

    Cheers
