Efflorescence

I noticed a couple of days ago I had this white, fluffy thing had appeared on the inner wall of my porch just underneath the window. After a bit of reasearch, it looks as though it could be efflorescence. Below is a photo of it.

Do you think the cause of this is because I haven't got a window sill fitted? And if I do fit one, it should cure the problem?

It is efflorescence - how long has the porch been built/plastered/painted?

Built 40/50 years ago, plasterered about 9 months ago and painted about 5 months ago. I think it's only a single brick porch.

Yes it looks like efflorescence to me too. Remove source of damp, brush (don't wash) it off, coat of anti-alkaline primer and repaint.

It could be poor sealing 'twixt window and brickwork and rain is being driven in by the wind.

Yes it could also well be the lack of an external cill (but we ain't got a pic of that) whose presence serves a purpose of chucking water away from the wall. An internal cill is largely decorative and somewhere for the missus to put her pot plants.

    Cheers

Thanks for the advice. It does already have an external cill but I thought the lack of internal may have been the problem, I suppose not. Will check the sealing between the window and brickwork outside.
