Fences: am I right in thinking?....
...that I can erect my own back garden fence my side of the original fence my neighbour owns? Currently there is a wobbly 3ft high fence running the length of the garden, it's my neighbours fence and only a few years old but I hate it. I own the beech hedge on the other side of the garden. I'd like a nice 6ft fence between…

Moving washing machine - inlet hose question
I want to shift my utility room about a bit, moving washer at right angles to where it is now. There won't be a lot of difference to the waste pipe, due to it being situated where it is but I'm concerned about the inlet pipe. Is there a maximum length of hose that can practically be used for the inlet or is it recommended…

Looking for recommendations for Vacuum cleaner
I haven't the faintest idea which section I should post this in so apologies if this is wrong, but I'm looking to buy a new vacuum. I can't afford a Dyson and I'm looking for something in the 50-60 pound price range. Several years ago I bought a no name bagless and it was CFU so I gave it away. I replaced it with a cheap…

My painting pet peeve....
That moment when you've only done the first coat and all it's done is made a complete mess; patchy with the old colour showing through. And you step back and think "Why didn't I just leave it?". Our kitchen came with two blue walls and two cream (someone spent the 90s watching home improvement shows). We're painting the…

Were looking to get an attachment to our bath taps so we can use it as an over the head shower. Our hot water will get pumped so both hot and cold water will be good pressure. Are back boilers expensive to run?
Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place, and further apologies for what's probably a daft question, but any help will be very gratefully received! We're looking to move into a new rented property soon and one of the places we're interested in has a back boiler. I really don't know a lot about them and I'm just…

wooden curtain poles - are they moneysaving as the cold goes up the gap
I am trying to insulate my house for the winter and one of the things I notice is that all of my lovely curtain poles are not very good. There are draughts up the gap at the top. How is everyone else dealing with this. I am loath to go back to the old fashioned plastic rails but they seem the best ones to ensure that this…

Squeaky floorboards in upstairs flat
I own a ground floor flat and am suffering from very squeaky floorboards from the upstairs flat (housing trust, rented property) which wake me up most nights (when my neighbour gets up and walks around). The lady tenant is very nice and there are no problems between us. I reported this problem to the housing trust. Their…
