Planning permission for shed in front garden?

We have a metal shed, which is 6 foot tall, by 6 wide by 4 deep. I researched carefully when putting this up in the garden but someone has pointed out to me that it needed planning permission where as I thought it did not. I did ring the planning dept when we put it up but have I got wrong information?

I'd be inclined to leave it where it is until someone form the Planning Department contacts you. Many neighbours are very good at telling you all kinds of things but normally from a point of ignorance.
Its hardly the crime of the century and can easily be removed if the Planning Dept tell you to move it.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
You say you rang planning, what did they say?0

Take a look at the government's planning portal at http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/outbuildings/miniguide
I would say there might be a problem with it being at the front of the house.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. they said it was fine and the planning portal website 'outbuildings guide' seems to indicate that it was ok, thats what i used at the time
he said it because we wanted to talk to him about a fence he has put up which is in breach of planning permission at the back because its over 2m tall. we never got to talk about the fence because he went on the defensive about the shed and about how a visitor of ours today had parked her car (legally and appropriately), so wanted to be sure. we will take it down if its not ok.0 -
Sounds like you jave a dispute going on with your neighbour.
I would ignore it and him if I were you and let the council do their job if there is one to do.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
The planning portal seems to suggest that if shed is nearer the road (or any public path) than your house, you'll need planning permission.0

i should just clarify, that although i call it a shed, its a bike storage thing, bicycle store i think its called. and i got the height wrong its 5.5 foot at the front and 5 foot at the back. i keep banging my head on it.
its right inbetween the edge of the house and the edge of the front garden so its not nearer to anything in particular. im not really sure what is meant by 'outbuildings', would this constitute an outbuilding?0 -
Just leave it there until someone from the council tells you otherwise. Its hardly the Taj Mahal. Don't you have better thuings to worry about in your life.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

well i dont want to be in breach of any rules whilst at the same time complaining about someone else,, so im happy to apply for permission if i need to but obviously there is a cost element!0

Do nothing!
Cant you read what you are being told?
Until the council planning department tell you that you must remove it then it can stay there
and AFAIK there is no need for you to apply for planning for it anyway.
Go ask on gardenlaw.co.uk and a retired planner will give you the lowdown on what can & cant be done. (hes a very helpful chap).0
