Busted grill - advice please
I have an integrated electric oven with a grill in it. Unfortunately the grill has stopped working. Having switched off the electric supply, I took a torch and looked at the element, it seems a white internal bit is poking through the external hard grey casing. Without any real knowledge, I'm guessing this could be the…

Washing machine not draining
Hi I have recently started using my washing machine overnight as that is when my electric is cheapest, and have it on a timer switch. I have allowed 4 hours on the switch, which is lots more time than required to complete a cycle. However, since I started this, each morning when I go to empty the machine, I have needed to…

Who Pays for what
I live in an upper cottage flat in scotland, the roughcasting from the bottom of the house has fallen off, with the extreme weather and also probably more due to a faulty drain pipe from the roof. Is it correct that me and the lower flat would have to half the costs to get it repaired????

External V Recirculating Extractors in Kitchen
Hi We are in the process of building a small extension and refitting our kitchen. We need to decide on the type of extractor (it will depend on where we put the hob) to fit. We think recirculating extractors are not very effective/noisy but not sure if this is unduly harsh! Any views on either type would be welcome. Thanks

Alternative to sanding floorboards?
I've just bought my first house and have decided that the floorboards in the living room are of good enough quality to not be covered - I know that sanding the floorboards and then painting them is the preferred option - but is there any other way of achieving a decent finish. With work and study commitments I'll struggle…

B&Q Kitchen fitting complaint
Hi everyone! We ordered a kitchen from B&Q last January following a pre-fit survey. We later had our delivery date as 24th March 2010 and contractors employed by B&Q (DSP) would arrange and project manage the installation which would take 5 days starting on 29th March 2010. I will try to cut a very long and eventful story…

Cavity Wall Insulation in new homes
I recently moved into a newbuild property and the insulation used is similar to a space blanket wrapped around the block work. I am thoroughly unimpressed with its thermal properties and have to have the heating set at 24 degrees just to keep warm Having had cavity wall insulation in a previous property I asked a firm to…
