Alternative to sanding floorboards?

I've just bought my first house and have decided that the floorboards in the living room are of good enough quality to not be covered - I know that sanding the floorboards and then painting them is the preferred option - but is there any other way of achieving a decent finish. With work and study commitments I'll struggle to find the time to sand the whole thing - plus i've heard it's a swine of a job!
Thanks

If they are of good enough quality then just buy a rug.0

Buy a carpet, it might seem expensive - but the heating bills will be far lower and it'll pay for itself very quickly!0
