for the hot water tank ?
Its sprung a leak, LL cant do anything till 2moz ( looks like we know the cause of the ceiling matter I posted a while back ) but its really leaking now.
And I've switched off the cold water, but is there a seperate one for the hot water ?
I'm panicking!
Short of cutting the entire supply to the house I dont know what to do.
*just thought i'd edit the title and take out emergency*

Have you got enough water for the morning?
If you have cut off the cold water, you have probably cut off the supply to the house.
Make sure the water heating is off then turn the bath hot tap and run it for a bit.
Can you normally hear the header tank filling up when you run the bath?
If yes, can you hear it now?
If not, you have cut off the whole supply but there is still the tank full of water to worry about.
Keep running the hot tap at the bath until it stops.
That will probably not stop the leak but, as far as I know, it is the best you can do for now.0 -
Thankyou.
Nope wont have enough water for the morning. have the kettle and a few pans filled from draining, so least kids can get washed etc.
Have cut the internal cold one ( i think ) I cant hear anything refilling. Have the hot water taps on full, cold water taps are empty.
Dreading the ceiling falling in! lol.0 -
I have read somewhere before (probably here) that to prevent bad damage to a ceiling, if there is a leak, it is best to make a small hole for it to 'leak through', rather than a large bulge to form, before bursting. Not sure if this applies to your situation.
All I can suggest is putting bowls, buckets etc. down to catch leaks and removing people and possessions from the immediate area. Also watch out if it is near electrical lights, sockets etc.
Good luck.0 -
You should be able to isolate the header tank.If not tie up the ballcock to stop more water getting in.Would agree with stress,if leek through ceiling punch a small hole to let water out0

Well. I still have a ceiling!
Leaking stopped at some point last night ( hubby and slept downstairs - just incase )
Contacted the LL last night, he's a uni in Notts, his parents who live down the road are on holiday.
I certainly dont have the funds to pay a plumber, so hopefully the LL can sort something out over the phone with one.0 -
I spoke too soon...
Its now coming down like heavy rain in my kitchen.
Thank the lord for buckets!
Gonna start moving electricals up.. just in case, I do a lot of things just in case lol.
No word from LL this morning. probably still sleeping.
Water supply is still off. so not sure where this extra water is coming from.
Oh I did flush the loo. using the water that was in the cistern, it didnt refill, with the water being off. bet I've gone a changed pressure and made more water fall out of wherever.0 -
Montrose, there is no access to the tank. its all been panelled off and walled in. The only way to get to it, is to get through the wall in the bethroom or the kids bedroom.0

turn off the main stopcock and open all the taps. that should drain all H/C water from the system.
or is it the CH system?Get some gorm.0 -
To be honest, I'm not 100% sure. Its the tank on first floor, with the hot water controls next to it in the boys room, so I've always presumed its the hot water tank. However OH says he's never seen a tank in the loft. Maybe he hasnt noticed it. We dont have any combi boiler thing, its just tanks.0

Opening the taps, hot or cold, will not drain the hot water cylinder.
To do this you need to shut off the cold feed to the cylinder or drain the cold water cistern and then drain the hot water cylinder using the drain-off and a hose.
Only then will your leak stop, if it is indeed from the cylinder.0
