Condensation in Lofts and Roof Spaces
I have just finished ventilating the loft of the 8th property this month, that has had recent loft insulation installed without any form of ventilation which had led to severe condensation problems. I really want to lobby the Government about this as the Carbon Emission Reduction Target grant scheme, does not allow any…

NEDL slow to fit PME
Hi We've been told by an electrician that we need to get a PME fitted as nothing in our kitchen is earthed . It is also having the knock on effect of our combi boiler being very unreliable, as it struggles to ignite. Obviously this is not good during the winter. Only the electricity board, in our case NEDL, can supply…

Accessing postbox
I moved into a new flat over 2 weeks ago and the previous tenant has still not returned her keys so I have no access to my postbox. The landlord wants to give her until Wednesday before looking into changing the lock but I have ordered some train tickets (back when I didn't realize this would be an issue) which I need for…

SCS - Faulty Sofa
To cut a very, very long story short, I purchased a sofa from SCS (please don't ask why) around 15 months ago. The cushions sunk twice within the first six months, it was agreed that I would have a replacement sofa. This was delivered & the guys came but could not get my sofa out. They said I had to take my door off, which…

How much is lead pipe worth?
My landlord recently had a plumber come in to do some work which included replacing a bit of lead pipe, with some new copper pipe. The piece replaced was perhaps 9-12 inches long and 0.5-1 inch in diameter (I believe it was part of the lead main inside the house). I didn't keep too much of an eye on the guy, but today I…

Bath leaking ... Plumbers Putty?
Hi, Since I currently have the side of my bath off (due to an unrelated problem) I have noticed that there is a slight leak from between the bath plug hole and the block type thing that contains/controls the pop-up plug (this block sits between the plug hole and the u-bend). The water then dribbles down the outside of the…

Confused about curtains. Pls help!
Hiya Curtains are something I've simply never given a moment's thought to before having my own place, so I'd appreciate a bit of advice! I've seen some lovely ones on sale in Debenhams but am now not sure if they'll fit our windows. :( They are the sort that would only really look good as long, drape curtains. However the…

Washing Machine Cycle never ends
Half of the time my Indesit machine completes its washing cycle ok. The other half of the time (even when put on the same setting) the cycle never ends. You can go back ten hours later and it is still going. Obviously I can switch the machine off, but the clothes are soaking wet and the experience is not doing them any…

Accent Walls - Can You Show Me Yours Please?
Morning Everyone We've been contemplating completely changing our living room - we were thinking about new leather furniture and I suggested chocolate brown (thinking that I could accessorise the cushions, curtains with mostly any other colour) - OH thought black would be better. We''re also changing the carpet so thought…

Under floor heating
Hi all....hope someone can advise... Just had a bathroom re-done (about a month or so ago), including electric underfloor heating under the tiled floor. The fitter advised that we shouldn't try the UFH for a month to let the adhesive dry naturally... So we tried it after a month, and whilst it worked (we've only tried it…

Have I got Cavity wall insulation?
How can you tell if you already have cavity wall insulation? The house was built in 1984. Would it have been common/compulsory then? It's a 4 bed detached house- built in part of the garden of a larger house, so no similar houses to compare notes with. Are there any tell tale signs, or would I have to get a surveyor round?

Large adjustable bed mattress
I have just got myself a 200x200 (6.6 square) bedstead. Both sides are independently adjustable. Many questions I do not mind not being able to use the adjustability, it was just size I was after, so do I go for one special-made mattress or two singles? If two singles how can I make sure they feel like one bed without a…

Wanted....a larder area!
We live in a standard 30s semi, no garage, and full central heating. Now, we are finding we eat a lot more fresh food, and the standard under counter fridge is squeezed for space. Having c/h, there is not a cold spot in the house, and I cannot really afford the space for a tall fridge. Is there any way maybe to 'build' a…

Shower pressure dropping
Hi, We have a Triton electric shower in our bathroom and we are having real problems with it. The water pressure into the house is fine, checked by the water company on Friday, and it comes out of the shower head fine so long as the shower head is at knee height but the minute the shower head is raised up the pressure…
