Are the council responsible for my T.V, ariel?

I moved into a new flat, i can not get any digital channels at all and the ariel is really old, it is a council flat, are they responsible for the ariel or am i meant to get on the roof and install a new up to date ariel myself?
If i have to do it myself, do you know how much it will likely cost? Or if i have to get a business to do it, what would be a fair quote?

If you are a council tenant, then I'd expect them to come out and sort it. Give them a call - chances are the flats all share a distributed system, check with your neighbours and see if they are having problems too.0

You may have to wait until nearer the time for digital switchover - they are probably responsible for ensuring that you can get a TV signal but whilst analogue is still in use in some areas you probably don't have a right to demand they upgrade until analogue is about to be switched off in that area.
If you are in the north east that will be Tyne Tees region which won't switch for another year (starts 2012) so I suspect you may have to wait until the council has programmed changes in connection with switchover.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
OK i will try them again, i have also emailed digital TV to see if they know.
I had a look outside and noticed my aeriel is lying flat on the roof half way down, looks like it has been storm damaged, i will see what the council say about it.
Thanks all.Owed out = lots. :cool:0 -

OK i went to the council just now and they confirmed because i'm a downstairs tenant, in a self contained flat with only 1 neighbour above me it is tenant responsibility, so i am looking now for a business or installation guy to fit one. New thread is necessary!Owed out = lots. :cool:0

You don't necessarily need a new aerial, you just need an installer to come along and refix your existing one, unless it's damaged. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

It looks damaged, i really don't know, i can get some picture from it and channel 5 looks very fuzzy, it may be fine but it isn't getting any freeview channels at all.
I will try get it fixed then instead of buying new, if that is the case, cheers mate, i never thought of just a repair on it.Owed out = lots. :cool:0 -
It is your responsibility unless you are in a tower block.0

Well, if it's detached from the chimney and hanging off the roof, you're not going to get a picture on it whether it's damaged or not, because it is no longer aligned with the transmitter...the installer will check it and advice if it needs replacing. If it does, it's not going to be hugely more, as most of the total cost is getting access-aerials can be bought for little more than a tenner. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
