Bath leaking ... Plumbers Putty?

Hi,

Since I currently have the side of my bath off (due to an unrelated problem) I have noticed that there is a slight leak from between the bath plug hole and the block type thing that contains/controls the pop-up plug (this block sits between the plug hole and the u-bend). The water then dribbles down the outside of the pipes and drips off the bottom of the u-bend onto the floor.

Since I don't know how to (and don't really want to) detach the cable mechanism that controls the pop-up plug, I can't really move the pop-up plug block around.

Would using plumber's putty (or similar) on this be good enough to stop the leak?

If so, can anyone recommend what I should use?

Cheers

You don't need to remove the cable.

Remove the "plug" and look in the plughole. You will see a cylindrical object that the pin of the plug fits into. You may not be able to see it but that object is threaded. Across the top of it you will see a slot. This will accept a suitably sized screwdriver blade and tightening this up secures the pluhole on the uper side of the bath to the "block type thing" underneath. There will be a rubber washer on both sides. If thats all loose then thats why its leaking.

Loosen it off even further slightly first, adjust the position of the assembly on both sides of the bath so that they sit central and the tighten it up again. You'll need one hand underneath to hold your "block type thing" to stop it rotating and another to use the screwdriver from above.

If that doesn't work the replace both sealing washers. Plumbers putty should not be necessary although sometimes a smear of silicone sealant or LSX on the mating faces helps.

There should be a rubber gasket between the base of the bath and the block to which you refer, and that should keep the water in. If you hold the block in place, can you tighten the screw in the middle of the plughole from above? If so, it may just be the plumber didn't tighten it enough. If not, it may be the gasket isn't sitting right, in which case you need to loosen the screw from above and reposition.

The plumber may also have put some plumber's mait between the bath and the plughole up above. This will need to be removed and replaced if you re-seat it. There may be a rubber washer here, depending on make/design of plug

  • There is no screw in the middle of the plug hole... however there are two slots either side of the central hole (that holds the plug pin)... should I try and use a large screw driver on those?

Yes thats what I said to do. Googlers post is describing a bog standard plughole not a popup waste.
