coal effect gas fire not working

in our back room, we have a wickes coal effect gas fire with individual coal pieces similar to link

following some building work last week, we had to remove the pieces. We tried to light the fire over the weekend (tried for several hours) and the coal doesnt seem to be catching the fire.
I spoke to a gas safe engineer and he said often the order and arrangement of the coal pieces will affect it. As there are over 30 pieces Im whistling abit
Any ideas on how to get it started again?

I would take all the coal out, light it and then put each piece back in.
This of course may be a very bad idea and kill you but we all have to take a risk now an again.0 -
