Was this bullshxx?
Difficult situation potentially, A colleague's husband is a sparky (industrial not domestic apparently). He's not had much if any work for months so I asked if he'd quote to rewire the house I'm about to buy. Met him at the house this morning and I'm afraid I wasn't too impressed. Didn't seem very knowledgable, said the…

Want to paint brown varnished doors white
Our house is full of those 1970's brown veneered doors which are gloss varnished, which we thought at the time would save maintenance. They've lived up to their promise but I'd now like to modernise & lighten the house and wonder what is the best way of painting them white. Will all the gloss varnish have to be sanded off,…

Old radiator output vs new radiator
Currently I have in my kitchen an old double radiator (no fins) - size is approx 590mm by 800mm. My mum is redoing her bathroom and is replacing her radiator with a heated towel radiator so has a reasonably new radiator I could use. It's a single panel, single fin of approximately 600mm by 700mm. Can anyone tell me if I…

Howdens Kitchen quote
Can anyone give me an idea of a price for a Howdens Howarth Oak ( white) kitchen. Had their kitchen designer come out and see us but he was a bit of a pratt ( got a speech about how they were trade only and couldn't give us any idea of prices) refused to give us any details whatsoever. Total waste of ours and his time.…

Celing work
Hello all. Bit of help needed please. We bought a new house in December and took down a fitted wardrobe. Hidden above the piece of wood at the top was a patch of ceiling that has come down (about 12 inches by 20 inches). The paper is bulging. It is dry and does not seem to have been damp. Any ideas on who I need to fix…

Tile Paint
We've decided against a kitchen refit and are going to spruce up the existing instead on a small budget. The only thing that lets the otherwise acceptable elements down are the pastel faux-mosaic wall tiles, so thoughts turned to tile paint. I did a forum search but no joy. My experience of tile paint is that it is on the…

Insulating a Bay Window
I'm thinking specifically of the roof - has anyone ever done this and if so, how? I've already got double glazing and the walls aren't cavity, but I'm willing to bet that there's no insulation at all in that little roof, given the age of the house. I don't really fancy tearing the ceiling down to get at it though!
