Intercom
Hey all I live in a block of flats (8) which has a communal door. The door has intercom buzzer system for visitors to ring to be let in. I answer the buzz with a phone handset then press a button on handset to let them in. Is there a way to easily disconnect the intercom? Without causing any permanent damage? It's rented…

Planning Permission Required?
Are there any planning permission 'experts' around :) I'm looking at knocking my garage down, and replacing it with another the exactly same size. Its 2.6 x by 8.1 metres. It's basically an old concrete 'prefab' garage that is raining in and doesn't look very nice. I would be replacing it with brick. I would be digging…

New radiator - do the lot at once?
We are going to change the radiator in the spare room to a newer one with a thermostat. If we do the one, would it make it worthwhile to do the others that we want to change to newer ones in other rooms at the same time or does it make no difference? Does the plumber have to drain the whole system or can they do one at a…

9 year old bosch fan oven not working?
My Bosch hbn7050gb/01 oven has the fan working but no heat. Nothing dramatic it just didn't heat up when switched on...the top oven is fine and the fan is whirring happily but no heat,.. Now my OH is not the most DIY minded ...could it be the element? Or something more complicated that would require an expensive call out…

Special paint for damp walls?
We are renting a property that is probably around 200 years old. It has an inherent damp problem in the walls, which has previously been treated (ventilation panels etc), but still exists to some degree. I'm not saying there is water pouring out of them, but they do show a high water content when measured with a meter.…

Appliance gliders to protect kitchen floor
Anyone have any good ideas about this? I had a kitchen fitted...badly and when the guy came to screed the floor he pointed out that the worktop was SITTING on top of the appliances, therefore no space for the screed and Amtico tiles without literally cementing the free standing appliances in. So...next week I am getting…

Matress toppers
Merry Christmas  I'm just looking for some info and advice on matress toppers. Just moved into a new place and the current bed/matress is a bit uncomfortable, so was thinking that rather than buy a whole new matress (probably expensive) that i could get a matress topper. I'm only going to be in the property for 6…

Loft Insulation....is there any reason why....
....I can't put the usual rockwool stuff between the rafters/trusses and staple netting over it to hold it in? I know you can get boards specially for this purpose that stay in themselves through compression only but they are a lot more expensive than the bog standard loft rolls.

home improvement grant scheme
Hi My local authority are running a home improvement scheme in my street which is not means tested but intended to raise the external area profile. I have just been considering repointing a piece of wall and also a new front door, both of which the scheme covers. The only downside is that there is a 5 year repayment period…

Silicone gone mouldy around shower cubicle. What is the BEST Silicone for this?
Hi all Believe it or not, I've just handed over £400 to have my living room ceiling re-boarded and plastered. This was because I came down yesterday morning and the ceiling underneath the shower was drenched. It turns out that the silicone in and and around the shower has now failed. I told a Friend last night of this and…

Painted floors
As the lino in our bath room is getting rather shabby, I was thinking of perhaps painting the floor boards rather than investing in new lino. Have seen this in a couple of houses and it looks quite good. I just wondered what would be the best thing to use to fill the gaps between floorboards, and also what type of paint to…

Burglar house alarm - what makes a good one?
Hi, The 3 bedroom semi detached house I'm buying doesn't currently have a burglar alarm installed. What should I be looking for in a good house alarm? Will an alarm from B&Q suffice, or are these so common that burglars know how to disengage them? Cheers
