Burglar house alarm - what makes a good one?

Hi,
The 3 bedroom semi detached house I'm buying doesn't currently have a burglar alarm installed.
What should I be looking for in a good house alarm? Will an alarm from B&Q suffice, or are these so common that burglars know how to disengage them?
Cheers

burglars dont do things like that.
thats strictly for Raffles type drama programs on ITV.
burglars smash their way in and get out fast. 3 minutes usually. they know the standard police response time is 8 minutes.
around our way its more like 2 hours.Get some gorm.0 -

That's not standard, it's immediate.
Two hours is good for a standard response.:DHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
There are plenty of ways to stop a burgalar alarm (Assuming it is actually working as plenty don't work).
Granted most burgalars will use force, it is important to not just rely on an alarm, it's far better to invest in good physical security, there are many things you can do that are very cheap of free. For instance simply locking your back gate so people cannot access the rear of your home reduces the risk of a break in massively0 -
What do you want an alarm for? They are just another symptom of paranoid britian. Check with your local community police officer as to the burglary rate locally. Its probably much less than you perceive.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

c_mababejiveyou are obviously one of the lucky ones that have never been burgled, i disagree with you on this. we were burgled years ago. at the time we didnt have an alarm and we were in bed at the time. since alarming the house and garage 20 years ago. there has only been one attempt on garage and they scarpered when the alarm went off. all areas are at risk from theives. apart from being a deterrent we also sleep easy knowing the house is alarmed0

I'd consider an alarm if I had anything worth nicking0

well swipe, how would a burglar know you had nothing worth nicking unless they broke into your house causing damage to it!
i should have added to previous post, after we were burgled we had an alarm installed by a registered installer[ it wasnt cheap] our insurers reduce the premium because of it.0 -
I'd have said CCTV footage recording any activity would be money better spent.
You could easily rig up a computer to do this, just check the footage every day or so and delete as necessary to keep the disk space free.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
I can't do a link but i got my alarm from Response Electronics, much better than B&Q.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
