Matress toppers

Options
Merry Christmas

I'm just looking for some info and advice on matress toppers. Just moved into a new place and the current bed/matress is a bit uncomfortable, so was thinking that rather than buy a whole new matress (probably expensive) that i could get a matress topper. I'm only going to be in the property for 6 months so don't want to spend too much (esp since i will prob leave it here).
Any help/advice/info appreciated. Best place to buy, prices etc.

Oh yeah, I should have added that I need it for comfort purposes (i.e.- the current matress is really uncomfortable because of the springs). Oh, and it's a double. Cheers.

I've put a duvet over the mattress as I was beginning to feel the springs, seems to have solved the problem for the moment. It's only a cheapo one from a supermarket. Try lying on top of your duvet to see if it's thick enough.

I have had one for about five years and found it super. I have just upgraded to a full mattress with memoryfoam ....well worth it. Just one tip woth the topper.....make sure zou also get a cover to cut down on wear and tear.

you could try one of those memory foam mattresses, over the top of yours.
    from about 70/150 quid.
    Get some gorm.
  • As above...watch out for the cheap offers on memory foam toppers in Papers etc...you really do just get a bit of bare foam which starts to shred over time. If that IS what you want..go direct to a foam cutting work shop and get it for half the price.
I presently have a comfy fibre filled topper from Futon workshop which was fairly cheap and is fabric covered.

If you can feel the springs then either it is a budget mattress or it is worn out. If it is worn out then ask your landlord to buy you a new mattress (never use a topper to try and revive an old worn out mattress). If it is a budget mattress then you want a topper that will put some depth between the springs and your body. For this reason memory foam isn't really suitable, and a quilt will only be of limited use.

What would be most suitable would be a reflex foam topper. For this it would be cheapest to go down to your local market where there are often stalls selling reflex foam. Then hold it in place using a mattress protector.

There probably isn't so much difference in price between a good quality topper and an average mattress. You can pick up a mattress for £100 if you shop around. Hey you can have my memory foam mattress. I hate it as it is far too warm.
If you are leaving the mattress in situ, I would get a very basic mattress as it's cheapness will mainly come into play after you have gone. So you will get the comfort from it.
If you plan on taking the mattress with you, get as good a quality as you can afford.
Or as suggested, ask the landlord to replace it.
There are plenty of discount bed retailers around. Also, don't pass up on second hand suppliers. You should be able to get something upwards of £50. After all, what are you lying on now? And if it is as shot as you say it is, consider all the little nasties milling around inside
