Advice about my Gas Meter
Hello good people, first of all, I know this is not a technical forum, and this is obviously a very technical issue, however I can't find a single UK forum that discusses Gas issues after 2 weeks of searching the internet! To cut to the chase I'm fitting a new garage door in my garage and the current position of the Gas…

Insulation in a loft bedroom
My MIL has a bungalow that has a two loft bedrooms one a decent size with velux window. Its very cold in there. The other room suffers from mold on a inside wall, despite letting air get to it. I believe that the walls inside (which you can get to via a hatch haven't been in to see yet) could be better insulated. I know…

How to insulate old converted outhouse?
HI, Hoping that someone might have some brilliant ideas. We have recently converted an attached outhouse / coal shed into a swish new office (where I am typing as we speak) and a bathroom. The problem is it is a single brick construction with 2 sides as external walls and REALLY cold in winter so being able to use the…

Should I replace whitegoods?
Because I had been admiring a friend's new kitchen I started looking at mine and working out how old things were. The kitchen was installed in 1983 which dates the fan oven and hob. Tumble dryer 1985. Washing machine 1990. Fridge/freezer 1991. Now I know that modern appliances are much more fuel efficient so should I be…

Limestone fireplace surround
I am after a limestone fireplace surround. I just want to know if what I am thinking I want can actually be done!! I don't have a chimney - just a flat wall. I'd like to have a fireplace surround, but not with an electric fire, just a space to put a basket or something. It would look like an open fireplace, but (of…

Rapitest Stud Detection
Hi, I've got a Rapitest Stud/Wire/Pipe detector, and I've used it just fine to detect pipe and wires, but how I've lost the instrutions and now have no idea how to check for studs. Using it the same way as for pipe and wires just gives a continuous signal when it's near anything solid. Is it just really crap?!

Boiler advice (a long shot, I know!)
I got a plumber in in April from the Recommended Tradesman website to remove a hot water tank, to put a new combi boiler in, thermostatic mixer shower and central heating. Heavy Range Cookers
Hello all, we are looking at buying a house and one the things I have always wanted is a heavy cast iron range like an Aga or similar cooker. Looking at a website by cosi it appears that Aga cookers are outrageously expensive to run because they have to be on all the time. I'm aware that buying a heavy range is an…

Fridge Freezer Problem - Help!
Hi, We have just obtained a second-hand Hoover hca391k fridge freezer. There was no manual supplied as we thought it should be easy to use! However, upon leaving it for 24 hours to stand, I switched it on and set it to number 3. Great - it worked and the fridge came on, the freezer froze, etc. Then this morning, my wife…
