Rapitest Stud Detection

Hi,
I've got a Rapitest Stud/Wire/Pipe detector, and I've used it just fine to detect pipe and wires, but how I've lost the instrutions and now have no idea how to check for studs.
Using it the same way as for pipe and wires just gives a continuous signal when it's near anything solid. Is it just really crap?!
