Black curtains -Help

Does anyone have black curtains and do they block out sunlight?
I have dark blue silk curtains, which are lined with white. The light shines through them. I am redocorating and thought that thick black curtains may help. I don't really want to spend loads more on blackout linings as i thinks that they don't hang right.
I can't really spend loads but there are 2 windows, both over 2 meteres wide.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Any colour curtains can block out the light. It depends on the thickness of the curtains, and the thickness of the lining.
Silk is very thin, so it's unlikely that any colour would block light, unless they were lined with blackout material.
Choose a denser weave, and thicker fabric.
Or keep the curtains, and fit black out roller blinds to the window (you can get these in any colour, including white).0 -
Ive got dark brown curtains and they let more light in than the cream ones I had before!
Blackout blinds are the way to go - Ive got them in my sons room and nothing gets through. They were fairly inexpensive too!Sealed Pot no 20110 -
Ok, thanks for your replies. I don't think there is room for a blind behind the curtains becauce it is a dorma window. There is no depth to them, or windowsill.
I guess i will just have to spend more than i wanted to.0 -
Why not back a normal darkish pair of curtains with proper blackout stuff like they use in theatres (woolsurge I think its called) these folk sell it (best to phone them and explain you want proper theatre balckout stuff if you go down this route (they will deliver)):

Even with blackout curtains, it matters how far away from the wall your curtain rail is......The old style tracks are much better than poles in this instance, as the curtains sit much closer to the walls around the window. Try a bit of velcro around the edges to hold them against the walls as tightly as possible.0
