Imperativ Wall Panels in Ikea - Do they not have plug sockets in Sweden?

Please can anyone help - very desperate. Any DIY expert or someone who works at Ikea may know the answer!

In Ikea (Kitchen booklet pg 22) they show the Imperativ wall panels (glass) and indeed in their showroom at Warrington.

Fab idea, great after ripping tiles off the wall and you don't want to put back tiles, looks great. One problem, take a look in the whole ikea kitchen booklet and Ikea - NO PLUG SOCKETS!!!! Any normal person will have plug sockets in between their worktop and wall units. Does anyone have any idea of how to solve this problem. Can you cut a whole in these panels, even though its 4mm glass, no-one seems to know in Ikea!!!

Hopefully some MSE on here will have a solution.

Thanks

Just had a browse of the website, they imply that sockets are horizontal on the underside of top wall cabinets, so to plug in you would have to hold plug and push up into the socket.

There is a blender on a Faktum page and you can just see the lead.

  • Aaah, what a silly idea though, especially now as I've had all my walls plastered allowing for the plug sockets, grrrrr.

What about your fuse for the cooker??? Surely not?

There is probably some small print somewhere saying that images do not necessarily comply with all legislation.

Perhaps just have glass where you don't have sockets and tiling where you do.

  • Have you tried a local glass place to see if they can create the holes you need? :D
  • Ah, now that's an idea, I'd not thought of that. Will have to check to see if they will cut the glass if I give them the template.

But how accurate would they have to be, would the socket covers hide all errors?

  • I would literally have to mark out with card the glass panels and the socket hole in them, so I guess they would have to be A1 accurate. Thats the downside.
  • If you go down this route just be very careful when screwing the covers back on... if they are not the type with a bit of foam/padding on them then tightening them too much could cause the glass to split... especially if the wall is not level... good luck in any case... maybe try one panel and see how it goes before committing yourself! :D

especially if the wall is not level...

good point, 4mm isn't very thick, and if they don't line up well they will look bad, especially in the light.

also depends on the actual glass material. some glass is impossible to cut!
