Is Cavity Wall Insulation A Legal Requirement On A New Build?
Hi there I live in a Bellway home which I moved into new in May 2005. The house is freezing and I had a warmfront man surveyor come round today to tell me that the house does not have cavity wall insulation. My partner is disabled and apparently we can have a grant to have this done free. Does anyone know if Bellway had a…

Gas v electric usage costs
If my gas is 1.924p per kilowatt hour and my electrcity is 8.926p per kilowatt hour is it cheaper to boil a litre of water on my gas hob than in my electric kettle? Obvioulsy the kettle has a rating plate stating its powewr consumption and I can time it and do the maths. How do I do the same thing for a gas ring? I recon…

Electric bill now £900!
Hello, I have just recieved a phone call from my electric supplier saying I owe them over £900 because they have been miss-reading my meters for the past 5 years! Apparently they have been taking the night readings as day one's and vice versa. Someone has called at the flat every year to take the readings and so it's…

Standing charge or no standing charge?
That is the question....lol We are not using our gas for heating, instead we are using a portable gas fire, so the only gas we use is for heating up the water via our combi, and cooking on the gas hob. Is it worth going over to no standing charge?

61p for 20 minutes of gas central heating - too much?
We've just moved in to a 1 bed-roomed flat (with a pre-payment meter) together and I thought the gas had been going down quickly. Today I took the meter reading before 05578,830 (93p) after having the heating on max for 20 minutes 05579,470 (32p) therefore 640 (m3??) was used. The meter measures in m3 and we're with ebico…

Npower discount - help please
I've been with Npower's SOL4 dual fuel since 2004 but as result of the huge increases in August I recently called them to change my Gas to SOL 13, leaving the electricity on SOL4. This should save around 1.5p per kWh. But I'm a bit concerned I may lose out with my annual dual fuel discount. (April anniversary) Npower said…

Info please on Click Energy (BG)
Hi, we're on dual fuel with British Gas, having switched from separate suppliers previously, as a comparison site put them as cheapest. However, now we've got a letter increasing the price threefold  (which I think is down to the price hike AND us being refunded credit recently). Obviously, I now need to check for a…

Watch Out -EDF 2009 Fixed Price and Standing Orders
A belated warning to anybody who signed up for the EDF “Fixed Price 2009” scheme ( NOT the later “2009 Price Protection” scheme) and who remained on a Monthly Payment Plan paying in advance of billing by Standing Order. EDF will probably be charging you according their “Cash/Credit” Tariff which has significantly higher…

Prepay meter, constant problems, had no hot water or heating since friday with two ba
I'm getting bloody fed up with it and could just cry. I've spent a fortune running our one oil filled radiator over the weekend just to get a bit of warmth. Our meter is with n power and it's been one thing after another. At the moment the meter is taking 70p out of every pound I put on the card for no reason. They are…

LPG (Gas) fire servicing cost
Hi we've just had our lpg coal effect gas fire serviced at a cost of £85 inc VAT. Apparently we have to have this done every year (according to the CORGI registered guy who did the job). BUT all he did was vacuum the tray that the 'coals' sit on and check that the flue was drawing with a match. The job took 5 minutes! We'd…

Meter/Gas Card Help
I had problems with my pre-payment gas meter at the weekend. British gas were out and have changed the meter. My current gas card no longer works with the meter, and I have £20 on the card. I also lost £3.77 from the old meter when they changed it. I have a few questions: 1. I put £20 on my gas card on friday night, and…

Threatening letter from EON - please help!
Morning! I am writing on behalf of my mother who received a letter from a solicitor buchananclark + wells in Glasgow demanding over £500 for an outstanding bill they were collecting for e-on from 2006-2007 to a property she sold 12 years ago! The letter is a formal demand, looks like a standard letter to me but threatening…

Is Electricity usage more expensive than Gas usage?
I have recently done a comparison on Uswitch and generally speaking, electricity was about 80% more per KWh than gas. I searched for dual fuel options and specified in the questionarre beforehand that I use gas central heating and a gas cooker. I wondered whether the gas came out cheaper per KWh than electricity as the…

Watch-outs to switching providers?
I rent a very small flat - just me. The heating is gas, the cooking is electric. I'm not home often, and the flat is very warm so the heating is on only minimal hours. British Gas have told me that a reasonable monthly estimate for gas useage alone is £70! I'm utterly gobsmacked. Only a month ago I was paying £40 a…

Huge price increase Atlantic
Please forgive me if this has already been discussed but as I can't find anything I thought I would mention it. The other day I received a letter dated October 2008 from Atlantic regarding my gas and electriciy price increases. My point is they quote the huge percentages and inform they are effective from August! I thought…

Immersion heater - advice please!
Please can you help me settle an argument with my OH? Our gas supply has been disrupted and is not likely to be fixed for quite a few days (burst main), so for the first time in years we're having to resort to using immersion heater for hot water. OH says it's more economic to leave it switched on all the time, but I'm…

British Gas Website - Does it ever work?
I joined BG recently on Click5 - then changed it to Click 6 and gave them my initial meter readings. I now wish to check that they have accepted them by looking at my account history on the website. I can log in perfectly well- but whenever I ask for "View Account History" I get a message saying "this application is not…
