Standing charge or no standing charge?

Options
That is the question....lol

We are not using our gas for heating, instead we are using a portable gas fire, so the only gas we use is for heating up the water via our combi, and cooking on the gas hob.

Is it worth going over to no standing charge?

For an average user it makes no difference, unless there are periods of the year when absolutely no gas is used e.g. property unoccupied etc.

    There is a difference.

If you are a low user, then you may not use enough to cover the standing charge. (They charge more for the first units used each billing period to pay the standing charge)

So you may as well go for no standing charge, as if you elect for standing charge tariffs, you always have to pay the full standing charge irrespective of how little consumption there has been.
  • By average each month has 30 days multiple by this by the standing charge of 11.27p per day for Scottish Power Electricity and you get £3.381. So is £3.39 really a lot to worry about?

Over £40 per year. It could be. It depends on usage.

The thing is, I've not seen a non-standing charge tariff yet that could ever be more expensive than the equivilent standing charge tariff. i.e. if you always use more than tier 1 on nsc, annual cost would be the same as with sc tariff. I'm not saying there isn't one out there, just I've never seen it.

So why ever choose a standing charge tariff when there is an equivilent no-standing charge tariff?

depends on the rate of electric your paying etc

if you payed £4 a month too much for every service you get im sure you would agree it would soon get into the 1000's
